MAYPORT, Fla. - Tons of illegal drugs confiscated by Coast Guard and Navy personnel over the last few months were offloaded at Mayport Naval Station on Friday.

Nearly 2 tons of marijuana and 1.5 tons of cocaine with a combined street value of $114 million were seized while while the USS Carr was deployed with the U.S. Fourth Fleet off the Caribbean and eastern Pacific coasts of Central America.

"I'm always amazed to find them at night after a long day looking for them," USS Carr Cmdr. Patrick Kulakowski said. "I'm always amazed after we get a bust how excited this crew is to have done their job properly and to get some drugs off the street as well."

The seizures -- part of ongoing Operation Martillo, Spanish for "hammer" -- was aimed at interdicting illegal drug shipments before they reach the United States. U.S. law enforcement agencies took custody of the drugs for testing and disposal.

In addition to the Carr, long-range P-3 Orion aircraft from based at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility at Cecil Field in Jacksonville, participated in the operation.

This was the Carr's last deployment. It is scheduled for decommissioning in Norfolk in March.

"It's good going out strong," Kulakowski said.
