1. Reign: The Conqueror
A bizarre sci-fi, fantasy re-imagining of Alexander the Great's life. The anime was an international effort, led by Madhouse studios, with Korean-American animator Peter Chung (Aeon Flux) designing the characters, and the majority of the animation being done in Korea.

2. Dai-Guard
By the late '90s, anime fans were getting tired mecha series that were rip-offs of Evangelion. Enter Dai-Guard, a playful mecha series that manages to be funny while showing the struggles of being a salaryman.

3. Magic User's Club

Takeo is a powerful magic user, a pervert, and he is Earth's last hope to defeat the aliens that have peacefully conquered humanity. Magic User's Club is a playful entry in the magical girl / boy genre, and if you don't mind a little ecchi, is worth a watch.

4. Soul Hunter
One of Weekly Shonen Jump's series from the late '90s (it even won a best manga award), the tale of bishounen Chinese gods trying to alter history. Soul Hunter has enough action and likeable cast of characters to make it time less classic, but was somehow lost admist the anime boom of the '90s.

5. Medabots

If you were a kid of the late '90s, it was hard to escape from the Pokemon vs Digimon school yard war. There was a third side for kids that wanted to act all Switzerland on their friends; Medabots. A series where kids use their pet robots in fights and how is Medabots not popular today?

6. Monster Rancher
Another "Mon" series created to compete with Pokemon and Digimon, Monster Rancher stands out with it's focus on character development, interesting story (for a merchandise driven kid show), and human characters that would fight along side their monsters. The series lasted for three season, but games are still being developed.

7. Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures
Dual! Parallel Trouble Adventures can easily be summed up as Tenchi Muyo! meets Neon Genesis Evangelion. Created by Masaki Kajishima (creator of Tenchi Muyo!), Dual! manages to blend the playful harem-comedy elements of Tenchi with the action and the dark tone of Evangelion.

8. Betterman
Known as the other dark mecha series from the late '90s, Betterman certainly can give Evangelion a run for the money. The series mixes three of the biggest trends of the time; fanservice, mechs, and body horror.

9. Crest of the Stars
In 1996, Hiroyuki Morioka released a three volume novel series titled Seikai no Monshō, which helped revive the sci-fi genre in Japan. The story is about Jinto, a boy whose planet is conquered by the Abh empire, and now must serve in the Abh navy. Often overlooked, Crest of the Stars is considered one of the best space operas to have been animated.

10. Generator Gawl
Take the time travel mechanic and basic storyline of The Terminator mix in the bio-suits, themes, and twists of Guyver and you have Generator Gawl. The tale of three boys going back in time to prevent the Third World War may not be unique, but it's entertaining for anyone looking for a time travel series with really cool action scenes.

11. Kurogane Communication
A quirky post-apocalyptic series about the 13 year-old Haruka and her family of five robots. While the animation quality isn't the height of the '90s era, the biggest flaw is the 12 minute runtime for the episodes.

12. Jikuu Tantei Genshi-kun
Taking the elements of Pokemon and Time Bokan, the series focuses on a time traveling caveman and his future friends as they try to save history. Saban Entertainment made a lot of changes for the English version, so watching the original Japanese series will be a whole new experience.

13. Gasaraki
Before Goro Taniguchi created Code Geass, he got his start as an assistant director on Gasaraki. The focus of Gasaraki is more on politics and human drama, making this a unique mecha series that drama fans will enjoy.

14. Shadow Skill

Shadow Skill tells the tale of Elle Regu, a legendary female warrior who mentors her adopted brother. The story isn't much to talk about, but the fight scenes are some of the most kick ass that you'll ever see.

15. Silent Möbius
This series has it all; action, comedy, aliens, magic, cyborgs, romance, and drama. While most series tend to fail when combining so many elements, Silent Möbius manages to be one of the more entertaining series from the era.

16. Lost Universe
Slayers in Space, the series has a lot in common in with Hajime Kanzaka's popular Slayers. Besides sharing the same creator, Lost Universe features many of the same themes and character parallels. Whether or not Lost Universe is set in the same universe or is an alternate take on Slayers, there is no question that it provides the fun that Kanazaka is known for.

17. Hare Tokidoki Buta
The wacky adventures of Spencer and his magical pet pig Sunny, directed by Watanabe Shinichi (Excel Saga). Not as well known outside of Japan due to a terrible localization job by Miramax, but it has been fansubbed.

18. Martian Successor Nadesico
For a brief moment in time, Martian Successor Nadesico was one of the most popular mecha series. The slapstick humor, fun characters, and excellent story attracted many fans. Unfortunately an ill-advised movie killed the franchise with it's awkward shift to a dark tone and angsty drama. However, if you haven't seen the TV series, do yourself a favor and experience it.

19. El-Hazard: The Magnificent World
One of the classic adventure-romance anime franchises, El-Hazard is fondly remembered by those who watched the OVA and the remake TV series.

20. Sorcerer Hunters
Carrot Glace is swordsman, his brother Marion and three others are hired by Big Mama to patrol the Spooner Continent to make sure that sorcerers are not abusing their powers. Sorcerer Hunters is pure comedy-ecchi fun.

21. Blue Seed
Momiji is an average girl in every way, except for being a descendant of the Kushinada family and being tasked with stopping plant-like monsters called Aragami. Blue Seed is based on the Izumo cycle of Japanese mythology and the god Susanoo.

22. Tonde Buurin
A magical girl series where our hero turns into a magic pig! A wacky idea that could only have happened in the '90s. Tonde Buurin is also a pretty funny series too.
