Basically Biden should have stepped down at the beginning of the year and allowed for a real primary.

Democrats didn't want one (and by Democrats, I mean the people). Democrats had 4 years to come up with someone and didn't, and when it was time to gear up again, people were convinced that the only person who could beat Trump was Biden and didn't wanna risk it with anyone else til they saw that debate. In the end, you had people in many cases, begrudgingly vote for Kamala, which even in a perfect world woulda had her BARELY win tonight. Dems didn't even allow themselves a pathway to win, but rather pray they held on. It wasn't as if some other state flipped blue. This was across the board poor planning.
