Of course you ruin movies with bad or too much CGI but that goes for pratical effects as well. Some shyt you simply can't do without heavy CGI.
Shout out to Warcraft.

i still maintain that the average movie goer gives little to no fukks about any of this. we just love movies so much so we know all that went into its production and know tom was really on that plane. regular people just see the trailers, see the explosions and go see the film.

a proper mix is probably best but the majority of people are not thinking about all that. either they had a fun time over those 2 hours or didnt.
edit:
Special effects can never replace the connection created by an excellent story that keeps you invested from start to finish. But you do feel something during those stunts, an elevated kind of thrill knowing Tom Cruise really is on that plane or on that motorcycle, risking his life so that we can have fun for a couple of hours at the movies. It could be argued that Rogue Nation would be no better if the whole thing were done with green screen. After all, real-life action gets our attention right now primarily because it feels so different. But with the next few years positively glutted with action movies, "different" might have a leg up on the competition.
bold is the main point. underlined probably 30% of the audience is even aware of in the first place, making it meaningless

i was gonna make a point about me being excited for star wars and keeping up with abrams efforts to keep it real, vs a casual star wars fan

but then i was like, a casual star wars fan is still pretty much a hardcore fan compared to other properties :pachaha:

CGI is a effective groundbreaking tool the thing is some Directors know how to implement it well while others do not. It's a great thing practical effects are coming back though it should have never taken a backseat to CGI if anything they're meant to complement each other.

CGI is a great tool to have in the tool box but to say average moviegoers will start to care about it is not sound thinking at all. Pop quiz: What's the 1st and third highest grossing movies of all time? Then, what's the highest grossing movie this summer?

It's always been there tho for real. it's never gone away. I just think when something like Mad Max comes out, it seems like it's made a "comeback" LL style when in reality, its just always there, just not as loud and in your face. Fury Road was Mama Said Knock You Out. I'm glad it's getting the attention and love tho
