The engineers have been putting the 2015 NSX through its paces on the Green Hell these days, but the hybrid decided to give up... in flames. The burning test vehicle was pulled over on the side of the track in the Pflanzgarten section of the ‘Ring. Talk about a dark coincidence - this is the same that saw
Porsche engineers crash the 911 Turbo facelift earlier this year.
The NSX may be a hybrid, but it showed the trademark behaviour of a mid-engine supercar, burning entirely up to the base of the windshield. Oh well, at least any luggage in the front compartment would’ve been untouched.
The two engineers testing the NSX wouldn’t have had time to remove that anyway, as the men quickly pulled over, exited the vehicle and took cover behind the guardrail.
In case you’re wondering what used to lie in the now melted compartments at the center of the 2015 Acura NSX, we’ll remind you the powertrain is comprised of a
twin-turbo V6, integrated in a complex hybrid all-wheel drive powertrain that sees the unit working with a double clutch transmission. Ready for some Japanese alphabet soup? The powertrain is called Sport Hybrid Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) and also includes three electric motor - the front wheels get dedicated motors, while the rear axle is motivated by a single one.
The company is scheduled to start the hybrid supercar’s production next year in the US at the Ohio Performance Manufacturing Center, so expect Honda to move past this unfortunate incident as fast as you’d say “NSX”.
