By NBC News staff and wire services
Two Marines are facing criminal charges for allegedly urinating on the corpses of Taliban fighters last year in Afghanistan and posing for unofficial photos with casualties, Marine officials announced on Monday.
The criminal charges are the first levied on anyone over the incident, which was recorded on video and circulated on YouTube.
The video, which showed Marines in full combat gear urinating on the bodies of three dead men, triggered widespread anger in Afghanistan early this year, with Afghan President Hamid Karzai calling the Marines' actions "inhuman." Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said he feared that the video could set back efforts to begin reconciliation talks with the Taliban.
The charged Marines, Staff Sergeants Joseph W. Chamblin and Edward W. Deptola, who were referred to trial by court martial, also face charges for failing to properly supervise junior Marines and failing to stop and report misconduct of junior Marines.

Old ass news. Good, they got what they deserved.

Let me ask you some questions: You think the enemy would punish their own for desecrating bodies?

You think the men who sodomized the Libyan Ambassador after his death will be punished in anyway?

We all know the answer.

:stopitslime:

You and I both know the ONLY reason this idiots are getting charged is because its on cam, off cam they would have gotten a slap on the back and a job well done.

And most of the time (KEYWORD: MOST), it hits the media way after formal legal procedures have begun.

Can you cite me one link where the enemy was punished in someway by their superiors for violating dead corpses?

I'll wait.

Slightly? Why can't you just have the balls to admit the truth here? Do you think that by doing that you might stain your other arguments towards American aggression? To me it won't.

These people who do these things get punished, whether there is media or not. This men were already in the process of being punished BEFORE this video hit the media.

We get it, you're all Pro-Islam, Anti-America. You made it well known where you stand, to the opposite extreme of the TLOL. Good on you.

I know this is a very sensitive and emotional issue for you brother. I don't want you falling back into that dark place, so I'll try to tread lightly.

while prosecuting soldiers for desecrating corpses should be commended, this expression of contempt, disregard and complete and utter hate for the natives is not a isolated incident but rather a systematic effort by all levels of the US Military to dehumanize the people they occupy and legitimatize the occupation. it's this mentality that had led to needless deaths of countless people, deaths that will never be prosecuted.

I'm not anti-US and I do have empathy for the average soldier, but the US Military as an institution does not have any monopoly on morality.

Contempt, disregard and complete and utter hate for the natives huh? Now who's the one buying the propaganda? That's real rich.

The Marine you linked, Jon Turner, was in my battalion. I knew that fukker personally. Do you want me to PM you various battalion pictures that he's in to prove it? I sure as fukk will. He was a sick individual, who kept his crimes to himself. There was various investigations due to his little made up shyt and my friends from his company had to be interviewed extensively by JAG.

Here's the absolute truth, after being ambushed and returning fire, we'd have to take fukking NCIS and JAG officers to interview the locals to make sure we weren't just indiscriminately shooting people. This happened in a fukking war. Don't lecture me about morality and military proceedings because you watch "Death To America" youtube videos.

AP) KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan officials said a NATO airstrike killed 8 women and girls who were out gathering firewood before dawn Sunday in a remote region on the east of the country.

The coalition said it believes only insurgents were hit.

Villagers from Laghman province's Alingar district brought the bodies to the governor's office in the provincial capital, said Sarhadi Zewak, a spokesman for the provincial government.

"They were shouting 'Death to America!' They were condemning the attack," Zewak said.

Seven injured females were brought to area hospitals for treatment, some of them as young as 10 years old, said provincial health director Latif Qayumi.

NATO forces at first said that about 45 insurgents and no civilians were killed in the attack, but spokesman Jamie Graybeal stressed later that they took the charge of civilian deaths seriously and were investigating the allegations.

He said, however, that initial reports showed only insurgents were killed in the airstrike.

Airstrikes have been a particularly sensitive issue between the Afghan people — who say civilians often end up killed along with or instead of insurgents — and NATO forces who maintain that they are a key tactic for going after insurgent leaders.

New wave of sectarian violence in Iraq kills more than 70

A series of bombs exploded in various parts of Iraq on Wednesday targeting Shi’ite pilgrims marking a major religious festival and killing more than 70 people. It was the worst eruption of sectarian violence since January.
In the deadliest incident, a bomb went off in the Kadhimiyah district in north Baghdad, where thousands of Shi’ites had gathered. An automobile exploded near a tent offering food and drinks to the pilgrims. According to AFP, “Human remains were scattered across the street, while cars and shops in the area were damaged.” A medical official said 16 people died in the Kadhimiyah bombing, and 32 were wounded.
In total, AFP reports, the Iraqi capital was hit Wednesday by ten bombings and two shootings, resulting in at least 21 deaths and the wounding of dozens more. Other blasts occurred in the Karada district, where Shi’ite pilgrims were again the target.
In Hilla, in central Iraq, two car bombs killed 19 people, according to a police captain and a doctor in the city’s hospital. A wave of attacks—two car bombs, two roadside bombs and two shootings—killed at least nine people in Baquba, in Diyala province, north of Baghdad. One of the car bombs exploded next to a police patrol, wounding four police.
