The following Friday (February 16) Mexico plays host to another must-watch rematch as Adrien Curiel and Sivenathi Nontshinga run it back for the IBF Light-Flyweight World Title following their dramatic first meeting at the Casino de Monte-Carlo last month.

Mexico’s Curiel (24-4-1, 5 KOs) ripped up the script by scoring a shocking one-punch knockout of South Africa’s defending champion Nontshiunga (12-1, 9 KOs) in the second round of their highly anticipated showdown in Monaco.

The 24-year-old makes the first defence of his World Title on home soil, determined to prove that his stunning knockout of the year contender wasn’t just a one off. Having tasted defeat for the first time in his career, Nontshinga is aiming to recapture his old belt to keep his dreams of unifying the division alive.

Mauricio Lara-Daniel Lugo To Land on Feb. 16 Curiel-Nontshinga II DAZN Show in Oaxaca, Mexico

Mauricio Lara is set to embark on his run as an aspiring two-division titlist.
The former WBA featherweight titlist will return to the ring on February 16, in support to the previously announced Adrian Curiel-Sivenathi Nontshinga IBF junior flyweight title fight rematch. BXSTRS Promotions confirmed Lara’s placement versus countryman Daniel Lugo on the DAZN show which will air live from Auditorio Guelaguetza on Oaxaca, Mexico.
Mexico City’s Lara (26-3-1, 19KOs) will fight for the first time since his lopsided points loss to Leigh Wood in their title fight rematch last May 27 in Manchester, England. The defeat came three months after Lara scored a come-from-behind seventh-round knockout to win the WBA title last February 18 in Wood’s hometown of Nottingham, England.
The loss to Wood in the rematch was doubly damaging. Lara entered fight week so far ahead of the divisional limit that the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) disallowed any attempt at a drastic weight cut. He left his title at the scales, and the defeat itself ended a sixteen-fight unbeaten streak that dated back to 2018.
The weight struggles headed into that fight prompted Lara’s team to immediately set their sights on the junior lightweight division. He will now fight in his home country for the first time since an October 2022 third round stoppage win over Jose Sanmartin in his Mexico City hometown.
Lugo (27-2, 18KOs) enters the fight armed with a three-fight win streak.
The 29-year-old fringe contender went the distance in a ten-round, unanimous decision win over Miguel Angel Torres last October 6 in his hometown of Hermosillo, Mexico. The fight versus Lara will mark a considerable step up in class. The show’s headliner sees Curiel (24-4-1, 5KOs) attempt the first defense of the IBF junior flyweight title. He won the title in a stunning first-round knockout of South Africa’s Nontshinga (12-1, 9KOs) last November 4 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Nontshinga previously won the title in a Fight-of the-Year worthy split decision win over then-unbeaten Hector Flores on a September 2022 DAZN show from Hermosillo.

Adrian Curiel was one-half pound lighter for his first title defense than when he won the IBF belt just three months ago.
The defending titlist and its previously claimant, Sivenathi Nontshinga, were both boxers were within the junior flyweight limit for their IBF title fight rematch on DAZN (Friday, 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. local time) from Oaxaca, Mexico. Curiel was 107.4 pounds for his first title defense, while Nontshinga was 107.9 pounds in a bid to regain the belt he lost three months ago.
Curiel was the author of one of the biggest upsets of 2023 when he scored a stunning first-round knockout of the previously unbeaten Nontshinga (12-1, 9KOs) last November 4 in Monte Carlo, Monaco. He entered the fight—his first outside of Mexico—as the slightly heavier challenger at 107.9 pounds. Nontshinga weighed 107.7 pounds ahead of his second attempted title defense.
Mexico City’s Curiel (24-4-1, 5KOs) returns to his home country for Friday’s scheduled twelve-round main event.
Nontshinga last traveled to Mexico in his title-winning effort over then-unbeaten Hector Flores. Their September 2022 scorcher from Hermosillo saw Nontshinga score an early knockdown and ultimately prevail via split decision.
His lone successful defense came in a twelve-round unanimous decision victory over unbeaten mandatory challenger Regie Suganob last July 2 in his hometown of East London, South Africa.
The evening’s co-feature will see Mauricio ‘Bronco’ Lara begin his journey as a junior lightweight contender. The former WBA featherweight titlist was 130.1 pounds for his scheduled ten-round bout versus countryman Daniel Lugo (27-2, 18KOs), who weighed 129.7 pounds.
Mexico City’s Lara (26-3-1, 19KOs) fights for the first time since his lopsided defeat to Leigh Wood in their rematch last May 27 in Manchester, England.
The setback came just three months after his come-from-behind, seventh-round knockout of Wood to win the WBA title last February 18 in Nottingham. Lara entered fight week for the rematch at a weight deemed by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) as too heavy to safely cut weight and thus lost the title well before the weigh-in.
Below are the weights for the full undercard.
Arturo Popoca (12-0-1, 8KOs), Sahuayo de Morelos, Mexico, 121 pounds vs. Ernesto Garcia (11-3, 10KOs), Zapopan, Mexico, 122 pounds—10 rounds, junior featherweight
Sergio Chirino (21-1, 12KOs), Oaxaca, 128 pounds vs. Dennis Contreras (24-13-1, 22KOs), Guadalajara, 128.7 pounds—10 rounds, featherweight
Criztec Bazaldua (3-0, 1KO), Los Angeles, 135.9 pounds vs. Alejandro Castillo (1-0-1, 0KOs), Cozumel, 135.3 pounds—6 rounds, lightweight
Federico Pachecho Jr. (5-0, 4KOs), Los Angeles, 255.9 pounds vs. Jose Mario Tamez (4-2, 1KO), Monterrey, Mexico, 230.8 pounds—4 rounds, heavyweight

Adrian Curiel and Sivenathi Nontshinga have satisfied their final obligation to move forward with their rematch.
Both boxers were well within the rehydration allowance for the IBF-mandated second-day weigh-in. All participants in IBF-sanctioned fighters are required to weigh no heavier than ten pounds above the contracted weight limit on the morning of the fight.
Curiel weighed 116.4 pounds, well within the 118-pound mark he was required to make on Friday morning. Nontshinga clocked in slightly heavier at 116.9 pounds ahead of Friday's IBF junior flyweight title fight rematch.
The weights represent a nine-pound gain for each from Thursday's official weigh in; Curiel was 107.4 pounds ahead of his first title defense, while Nontshinga was 107.9 pounds, just under the divisional limit in a bid to regain his old title.
Their bout headlines a DAZN show which will air live Friday evening from Oaxaca, Mexico beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. local time.
