Ryan Garcia returns to the ring, looking to leverage his rising star power into a world lightweight title shot.
What often gets lost in the shuffle of Ryan Garcia's massive Instagram following is that the kid continues to gain steam as a serious threat to become a lightweight world champion.
The 21-year-old undefeated boxer and heartthrob, who has nearly five million followers on IG, will have his first fight of 2020 on Valentine's Day, Friday, Feb. 14, when he faces Francisco Fonseca at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., live on DAZN.
Garcia beefed up his record to 19-0 in savage fashion last year by making Jose Lopez quit after the second round in March and delivering a first-round KO of Romero Duno in November. The latter performance served as the co-main event to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's 11th-round KO of Sergey Kovalev. Now in his 20th pro bout, Garcia (19-0, 16 KOs) looks to inch closer to a world title shot.
"20-0 in 2020 has a great ring to it!" Garcia tweeted late last week. "Time to buckle down and zone in."
Garcia faces Fonseca (25-2-2, 19 KOs), whose two pro losses came against former world champion Tevin Farmer in December 2018 and current WBA (Regular) lightweight champion Gervonta Davis back in August 2017. Since the Farmer loss, though, Fonseca pieced together three straight wins and fought Alex Dilmaghani to a majority draw in November during his last time out.
Will Garcia's rising star power make an example out of Fonseca and land a world title shot next, or will the Nicaraguan fighter prove that he's not ready to be relegated to gatekeeper status in the division just yet?
