Look at Big-O's leadership and control... :youngsabo: needs to schedule an appointment to pick the brain of Oscar one of these days

Everyone's mid range game. :ohlawd:

Ball movement. :lawd:

Must be a lost art due to rule changes. That was before the 3 point line and the baskets were protected much more physically with HOF big men. (look at the contact that isn't called as flagrant fouls on some of the plays from back then). I got about a dozen and a half games from that era and I still haven't noticed any ticy tac fouls, if u went in for a dunk or layup and the defender went up with u you were more likely to draw a floorburn than a whistle. Mid-range scoring repertoire must have been the staple way to score in the league back then

I can see the Oscar influence on Magic Johnson.

His pops used to drive him down to Milwaukee to watch Kareem & the Big O

That's why in his first NBA game, Kareem hit that game winning hook, and Magic went nuts.

It was his childhood dream to drop dimes to Kareem.

It's not a lost art, it's just migrated to the PF position, a requirement for a PF today is the ability to hit the 14-18 footer. The best PFs in the league can all hit the mid-range jumper, currently the best shooter in the league from 16-23 feet is Chris Bosh, and the best from 10-15 feet is Ibaka (Noah is shooting 100% on them but doesn't take them).

I think it's a spacing issue and the fact defenses recover so quickly, if you watch NBA guys in practice they are draining these shots like it's nothing, but when they have a defender flying at them the percentage drops. With PFs, they are often the guy that pops out on the pick, they get more time and space to shoot the jumper and the majority of the time they are stationary when they do it.

Unfortunately I haven't mixed any of it so your only avenue to see him at the moment is if your patient enough to sit through full games and game segments.

Gus Johnson was on some Bynum-level knees for those Finals - hence both knees wrapped up. He looks like a normal athletic guy in the footage save for the biffed dunk - but a few seasons earlier he was video game athletic (like a Vince Carter or a Shannon Brown) and could have put that dunk in from the free throw line. Johnson was supposedly incredibly strong too, 6:38 in those Finals highlights Dandridge tries to post Gus up and Gus just puts his hand on the dude and stops him dead in his tracks.

Here's a good bio on Gus:
JockBio: Gus "Honeycomb" Johnson Biography

And I made this vid a while back on him:

I'm gonna go ahead and drop this in here since it's the same Bucks squad from earlier that season.

Regular season their first matchup vs the reigning champion NY Knicks squad lead by Willis Reed and Walt Frazier. Lots of hype leading up to the game since the Bucks were the up and coming powerhouse in the middle of a 16 game win streak and were the best offensive team in the league where as the Knicks were the best defensive team in the league. Those early 70's Knicks lineups are often reputed as one of the highest bball IQ squad of all time, always hitting the open man and making the "right" plays etc.

Oh and when's the last time 2 dominant centers squared off and scored 30 a piece? - Reed went off for 34 with 12+ boards and 4 blocks and Jabbar had 33 with 16+ boards and 5 blocks :wow:
