The Showtime card originally set for Nov. 28 has been officially moved to Dec. 12, as has been expected. The idea was first reported eight days ago, when the originally planned Dec. 12 card headlined by Nordine Oubaali vs Nonito Donaire was moved to Dec. 19, with Emmanuel Rodriguez replacing Oubaali.

The Dec. 12 card will still be headlined by a 130-pound main event between Chris Colbert (14-0, 5 KO) and Jaime Arboleda (16-1, 13 KO), which is a decent matchup. It now won’t go head-to-head with the Tyson-Jones PPV, which like it or not is going to be the story of the night on Nov. 28, though it will now go head-to-head with an ESPN card headlined by Shakur Stevenson vs Toka Kahn Clary.

The Showtime event will be a triple-header, featuring veteran middleweight Matt Korobov (28-3-1, 14 KO) taking on Ronald Ellis (17-1-2, 11 KO) in a 10-round co-feature, and Richardson Hitchins (11-0, 5 KO) taking a good step up against Argenis Mendez (25-5-3, 12 KO) in a 10-round junior welterweight opener.

The show will be held behind closed doors at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn., where all of Showtime’s non-PPV events have been held since August.

Ronald Ellis 5 Pounds Overweight For Showtime Opener Against Matt Korobov
By Keith Idec

Published On Fri Dec 11, 2020, 12:06 PM EST

Ronald Ellis didn’t even come close to making weight Friday morning for his televised fight against Matt Korobov on Saturday night.

Ellis weighed 166 pounds when he stepped on the Mohegan Tribe Department of Regulation’s scale. The contracted maximum for their 10-rounder is 161 pounds.

Korobov officially weighed 160 pounds. The teams for Korobov and Ellis agreed that Ellis would attempt to lose some of the extra weight later Friday and pay a financial penalty out of his purse to Korobov for missing weight.

Whatever Ellis eventually weights, their super middleweight match is expected to move forward. It’ll open Showtime’s tripleheader, which is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. EST from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

The 37-year-old Korobov (28-3-1, 14 KOs), of Lantana, Florida, will fight for the first time since suffering a tear to his left rotator cuff early in the second round of his fight against Chris Eubank Jr. a year ago at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. England’s Eubank (29-2, 22 KOs) won that bout by second-round technical knockout because Korobov couldn’t continue.

The 31-year-old Ellis (17-1-2, 11 KOs, 1 NC), of Lynn, Massachusetts, last fought the same night Korobov lost to Eubank. Ellis edged Immanuwel Aleem by majority decision in a 10-rounder on that card.

Aleem (18-2-2, 11 KOs) and Korobov boxed to a 10-round majority draw in Aleem’s previous appearance.

Earlier Friday, the other four fighters scheduled to box in matches Showtime will televise Saturday night met their contractual obligations.

Brooklyn’s Chris Colbert and Panama’s Jaime Arboleda both made weight for their 12-round, 130-pound title fight. Colbert and Arboleda each officially weighed exactly 130 pounds.

The 24-year-old Colbert (14-0, 5 KOs) is listed as at least a 14-1 favorite to beat Arboleda (16-1, 13 KOs) in the main event of Showtime’s tripleheader. He’ll make the first defense of the WBA interim world super featherweight title he won by out-boxing another Panamanian opponent, Jezzrel Corrales (23-4, 9 KOs, 1 NC), whom Colbert beat by unanimous decision in their 12-round fight January 18 at Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia.

Arboleda survived a 12th-round knockdown and edged Puerto Rico’s Jayson Velez (29-7-1, 21 KOs) by split decision in his last fight, a 12-rounder February 8 at PPL Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Before Colbert and Arboleda made weight, Brooklyn’s Richardson Hitchins weighed in at the contracted limit of 140 pounds for his 10-round junior welterweight fight against former IBF junior lightweight champ Argenis Mendez. The Dominican Republic’s Mendez also came in at exactly 140 pounds.

The 23-year-old Hitchins (11-0, 5 KOs), who is promoted by Floyd Mayweather’s company, will take a step up in competition versus the 34-year-old Mendez (25-5-3, 12 KOs, 1 NC). Showtime will televise the Hitchins-Mendez match immediately before the main event between Colbert and Arboleda.
