Sergey Lipinets vs. Kudratillo Abdukakharov Tops October 10 Showtime Tripleheader
By Jake Donovan

Published On Wed Jul 22, 2020, 11:00 AM EST

A welterweight fight that has been in development since last fall finally has a date and a home.

The long-ago agreed-to welterweight clash between Kudratillo Abdukakhorov and Sergey Lipinets will now take place October 10, live on Showtime from crowdless Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut. The bout will be contested for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) interim welterweight title at stake, with the winner will be first in line for a mandatory shot at unified welterweight titlist Errol Spence Jr.

For all of the boxing politics in the sport, putting together a fight between boxers representing Premier Boxing Champions (Lipinets) and Top Rank (Abdukakhorov) proved far easier than actually securing a date for the occasion. Both boxers were willing to square off simply when there was little more at stake than simply marking time at a point when it was unclear when Spence (26-0, 21KOs) would be able to return to the ring following injuries sustained in a single car crash last fall.

Their patience now comes with the reward of an interim title at stake, while landing in the middle of a loaded second-half schedule announced by Showtime and PBC on Wednesday.

As the top two contenders, Abdukakhorov and Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs) were sent an invitation to contend for the interim title. Neither side blinked in accepting the offer, with their respective promoters working out the financial aspect of the bout without any real issues—other than being able to find a date and location.

Tentative plans called for the two to collide on the undercard portion of the heavyweight championship rematch between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder this past February in Las Vegas. The hold-up in Spence’s title status delayed that vision, before all involved parties targeted May 16 for the bout—only to get shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The bout will now headline its own tripleheader, aided by a pair of crossroads bouts.

In the chief support, Sacramento’s Xavier Martinez (15-0, 11KOs) will face former secondary featherweight titlist Claudio Marrero in a 10-round junior lightweight bout.

Opening the telecast, Baltimore’s Malik Hawkins (18-0, 11KOs) and Puerto Rico’s Subriel Matias (15-1, 15KOs) collide in a battle of rising junior welterweights.

Uzbekistan’s Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9KOs) has long served as the mandatory challenger to the IBF title which Spence has held since a May 2017 knockout win over England’s Kell Brook. Spence has since added the World Boxing Council (WBC) welterweight title to his collection following a 12-round win over Shawn Porter in their unification bout and Fight of the Year-level war last September in Los Angeles.

Just two weeks later, Spence suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries in a car crash in downtown Dallas, near his Desoto, Texas home. His recovery process and career update provided the IBF with enough information to determine the need to establish an interim titlist.

Abdukakhorov has since added a win over former welterweight titlist Luis Collazo, which came last October in Philadelphia.

Lipinets (16-1, 12KOs)—a former 140-pound titlist from Woodland Hills, California by way of Kazakhstan—has sought to make his way back to the title scene ever losing his strap in a 12-round decision to Mikey Garcia last March.

Three wins have followed, including a 10th round knockout of former two-division title claimant Lamont Peterson in their Fight-of-the-Year level war last March atop a PBC on FS1 card from Oxon Hill, Maryland. Four months later came his most recent bout, slaughtering Philippines’ Jayar Inson—a late replacement for an ill John Molina Jr.—in two rounds on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s welterweight title winning effort over unbeaten Keith Thurman last July in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sergey Lipinets vs. Custio Clayton Set For IBF-Interim, Abdukakhorov is Out
By Random Hits

Published On Thu Oct 15, 2020, 12:13 PM EST

Former world champion Sergey Lipinets will now face unbeaten Custio Clayton for the Interim IBF Welterweight Title headlining action live on SHOWTIME Saturday, October 24 from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. in an event presented by Premier Boxing Champions.

Kudratillo Abdukakhorov, who was originally scheduled to face Lipinets, was forced to withdraw because of visa issues.

The SHOWTIME BOXING: SPECIAL EDITION telecast will begin at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT and will see undefeated contender Xavier Martínez battle hard-hitting Claudio "The Matrix" Marrero in a 12-round WBA Super Featherweight Title Eliminator in the co-main event. Rising super lightweight Malik "Iceman" Hawkins will duel knockout artist Subriel Matías in a 10-round showdown to kick off the televised action.

The event is promoted by TGB Promotions, Lee Baxter Promotions and Mayweather Promotions.

"Custio Clayton is an outstanding replacement opponent given the late change and should provide a stiff test against Sergey Lipinets on October 24," said Tom Brown, President of TGB Promotions. "Clayton was already deep into training and will bring a wealth of experience, from his amateur days through his impressive pro career, into this showdown with Lipinets. This is a great opportunity for Clayton to announce himself as a welterweight contender against one of the division's most dangerous fighters."

"I'm very happy to have this opportunity," said Clayton. "This is exactly the type of fight me and my team have been asking for. My preparation has been very good. This might seem like it's last-minute, but I am more than ready for whatever Lipinets brings on October 24."

The 31-year-old Lipinets (16-1, 12 KOs) will look to remain unbeaten since moving up to welterweight in 2018 and position himself for further title opportunities in the welterweight division. Born in Kazakhstan and representing Russia, Lipinets now lives in Woodland Hills, Calif. and is trained by renowned coach Joe Goossen. Lipinets has put together three straight victories since losing his 140-pound title to four-division champion Mikey Garcia in March 2018. Lipinets scored two victories in 2019, including a stoppage of two-division champion Lamont Peterson in one of the year's most exciting fights.

A 2012 Canadian Olympian, Clayton (18-0, 12 KOs) fights out of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and will make his U.S. debut on October 24. The 33-year-old is unbeaten since turning pro in 2014 and most recently scored a knockout victory over Diego Ramirez in January. Clayton owns 2019 triumphs over former champion DeMarcus Corley and Johan Perez, in addition to a 12-round decision win over then unbeaten Stephen Danyo in 2018.

Sergey Lipinets-Custio Clayton Weigh-In Results From Mohegan Sun
By Keith Idec

Published On Fri Oct 23, 2020, 12:40 PM EST

Sergey Lipinets and Custio Clayton came in on weight Friday morning for their 12-round, 147-pound title fight Saturday night.

Kazakhstan’s Lipinets stepped on the Mohegan Tribe Department of Regulation’s scale at exactly 147 pounds. Canada’s Clayton also officially weighed 147 pounds for a bout Showtime will televise as the main event of a three-fight telecast from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Lipinets, 31, and Clayton, 33, will fight for the vacant IBF interim welterweight title.

The winner will move closer toward a shot at whoever emerges victorious from the Errol Spence Jr.-Danny Garcia bout. Spence (26-0, 21 KOs) will defend his IBF and WBC welterweight titles against Garcia (36-2, 21 KOs) in a FOX Sports Pay-Per-View main event December 5 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Lipinets (16-1, 12 KOs) was supposed to box Uzbekistan’s Kudratillo Abdukakhorov, but visa issues prevented Abdukakhorov (17-0, 9 KOs) from traveling to the United States from Malaysia, where he now resides. Ottawa’s Clayton (18-0, 12 KOs) replaced Abdukakhorov on approximately two weeks’ notice.

Lipinets is ranked third by the IBF in the welterweight division. Clayton is ranked fifth, four spots beneath the top-rated Abdukakhorov.

Earlier Friday, Xavier Martinez and Claudio Marrero made weight for their 12-round, 130-pound WBA elimination match.

Sacramento’s Martinez (15-0, 11 KOs) officially weighed 130 pounds. The Dominican Republic’s Marrero (24-4, 17 KOs) initially came in at 130½ pounds, but he returned to the scale several minutes later at the contracted maximum of 130.

Showtime will air the Martinez-Marrerro match immediately before Lipinets-Clayton.

Marrero, 31, is the WBA’s fourth-ranked contender in the 130-pound division. Martinez, 22, is rated seventh.

The winner will move closer toward a fight against the victor of the upcoming Leo Santa Cruz-Gervonta Davis fight. Santa Cruz (37-1-1, 19 KOs) will make his first defense of the WBA “super” 130-pound title versus Davis (23-0, 22 KOs) in a Showtime Pay-Per-View main event October 31 at Alamodome in San Antonio.

Before Martinez and Marrero made weight, Malik Hawkins and Subriel Matias met their contractual obligations for a 10-round junior welterweight fight that’ll open Showtime’s tripleheader at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Baltimore’s Hawkins stepped on the scale at 140¼ pounds, slightly more than Puerto Rico’s Matias, who weighed 139½ pounds.

The 28-year-old Matias will fight for the first time since suffering his lone loss – a 10-round unanimous decision to Armenia’s Petros Ananyan (15-2-2, 7 KOs) on February 22 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Hawkins, who also is promoted by Mayweather’s company, last fought December 28, when he stopped Darwin Price (16-1, 9 KOs). Price suffered a knee injury during the fifth round that prohibited him from continuing December 28 at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
