Three world championship fights are on the docket for Oct. 23.

Typically on boxing shows, there's only one world championship fight.

Fans get a special treat eight days before Halloween as three world title bouts top the bill on Friday, Oct. 23 at Azteca Studios in Mexico City, led by Juan Francisco Estrada defending the WBC super flyweight belt in a rematch against Carlos Cuadras; Román "Chocolatito" González puts the WBA super flyweight championship on the line vs. Israel Gonzalez; and Julio Cesar Martinez defends the WBC flyweight strap against Maximino Flores.

Wins from Estrada and González would put them on a collision course for a rematch won by the latter in November 2012 via unanimous decision.

Estrada and Cuadras fought in a highly competitive contest in 2017, with the former winning a narrow decision. Estrada (40-3 27 KOs) makes his 2020 debut. He last fought in October 2019, stopping Dewayne Beamon via ninth-round TKO. Estrada is excited to return to action but has his sights on "Chocolatito".

"I am excited to return to the ring," Estrada said in a press release. "It has been tough months for the whole world, and we want to give a great show to all the fans of this sport.

"The first fight against Cuadras was a good fight; without a doubt, this will be too. Also, we are going to share the show, Chocolatito and I. And if everything goes well, we hope to see each other again soon."

It appeared that González (49-2, 41 KOs) had seen better days heading into the Kal Yafai bout in February, as he'd gone 2-2. But the former top pound-for-pound fighter in boxing found the fountain of youth, dominating Yafai and winning by ninth-round TKO to capture the WBA belt.

"I want to thank God for giving me the strength to endure the sport I love and defend my world title," Gonzalez said. "I want to thank Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing as well as my family of Teiken. I also want to thank all my fans, especially my Mexican friends and Zanfer promotions for giving me this great opportunity, it is truly a blessing to fight in Mexico, and I am ready to give my all on October 23."

Over a short time, Martinez (16-1 12 KOs) has become one of the most exciting fighters in the sport with his all-action style and ferocious punching power. The 25-year-old stopped Cristofer Rosales in December to win the WBC belt. He successfully defended the title against Jay Harris in February via unanimous decision.

"I've been preparing very well here with my trainer Mauricio Aceves," Martinez said. "We’re having a very strong camp. Thank God that I’ve still been able to work out throughout the pandemic. Either my trainer comes to my house, or I go to his. Either way, I haven’t lost my conditioning.

“Thank God I haven’t been directly affected by the pandemic. I’ve been able to remain active with running and practical skills with the help of Mauricio. We’re just here putting the final touches on my training, but I’m very confident that my trainer has me in the best shape for this upcoming fight.”

The world title triple-header will be shown on DAZN in the U.S. and TV Azteca in Mexico.

Julio Cesar Martinez Hunts For Replacement, Maximino Flores (COVID) Out
By Jake Donovan Published On Thu Oct 15, 2020, 10:48 PM EST
Julio Cesar Martinez is once again faced with compromised plans for his next scheduled fight.

A new opponent will need to be secured for the reigning WBC flyweight titlist, who is due to appear on the undercard of the October 23 DAZN show airing live from Mexico City. Martinez’s originally scheduled opponent, Maximino Flores was forced to withdraw after testing positive for COVID-19, multiple sources informed BoxingScene.com on Thursday.

News of the development was first reported by ESPN Deportes’ Salavador ‘Chava’ Rodriguez.

The news is obviously a letdown for Martinez (16-1, 12KOs) who aims to make his second flyweight title defense. The squat brawler from Mexico City was previously slated to defend versus Puerto Rico’s McWilliams Arroyo on August 15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, only to have to withdraw due to non-COVID related illness.

Barely two months later, he is now left without an opponent for the moment. Sources inform BoxingScene.com that such a process to secure a replacement foe is currently underway, although still very much up in the air as this goes to publish.

Flores (25-4-2, 17KOs) aimed to add the WBC strap to his current hold on the IBO title, which he won in a technical decision win over Carlo Caesar Peñalosa last August on the road in the Philippines. That dream is now on hold given his current medical status.

Martinez claimed a flyweight title with a 9th round stoppage of Cristofer Rosales last December in Phoenix, Arizona. The win helped cap a banner year for his team, namely head coach Eddy Reynoso, who was named 2019 Trainer of the Year for his work with Martinez, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, Ryan Garcia and Oscar Valdez.

For Martinez, it was sweet success the second time around, winning the same belt that was literally taken from him in a knockout win-turned No Contest versus Charlie Edwards last August. An originally ruled 3rd round knockout was overturned due to Edwards being hit while down on a knee from an official knockdown. One title defense has followed since his win over Rosales, scoring a competitive but clear decision over unbeaten Jay Harris in their 12-round scorcher this past February in Frisco, Texas.

His second title defense will depend on how efficiently the team at Zanfer Promotions can navigate during a pandemic.

Martinez’s scheduled bout comes in supporting capacity to a pair of junior bantamweight fights, one of which could also be in jeopardy.

For now, the one that remains fully intact and free of rumors involves four-division and reigning 115-pound titlist Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez. The modern-day legendary boxer from Managua, Nicaragua makes the first defense of his second junior bantamweight title reign versus Los Cabos’ Israel Gonzalez (25-3, 11KOs; no relation) in the evening’s chief support.

Conflicting information leaves the main event in question.

Juan Francisco Estrada (40-3, 27KOs) is scheduled to defend his lineal junior bantamweight championship versus former titlist Carlos Cuadras (39-3-1, 27KOs), whom he defeated in a non-title fight in September 2017. The same report from ESPN Deportes indicates that the bout is in trouble due to Cuadras testing positive for COVID, although BoxingScene’s sources insist the fight remains intact until otherwise notified.

Whether in present form or versus a replacement opponent, Estrada will make the second defense of the 115-pound crown. The 30-year old from Hermosillo, Mexico claimed in a majority decision win over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in their thrilling rematch last April to become a two-division champion. Estrada previously reigned as a unified flyweight titlist before moving up to junior bantamweight in 2016.

Julio Cesar Martinez vs. Moises Calleros Now Set For Mexico City Card
By Jake Donovan

Published On Mon Oct 19, 2020, 04:01 PM EST

Friday’s show in Mexico City remains a title fight tripleheader.

Reigning flyweight titlist Julio Cesar Martinez will proceed with his next title defense, as he will face countryman Moises ‘Taz’ Calleros in a scheduled 12-round contest. The bout serves part of a stacked DAZN-USA show live from Gimnasio TV Azteca in Mexico City. which features three title fights.

Calleros (33-9-1, 17KOs) enters as a late replacement for Maximino Flores, whom tested positive for COVID-19 as BoxingScene.com previously reported.

Martinez will make the second defense of the flyweight title he violently snatched in a 9th round stoppage of Cristofer Rosales last December in Phoenix, Arizona. The win came four months after having believed to have won the belt, only for his knockout win over Charlie Edwards to be ruled a No-Contest due to landing a body shot while Edwards—the defending champ at the time—was on the canvas.

The lone defense of Martinez’s reign thus far came earlier this year, scoring a 12-round unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Jay Harris in their entertaining clash this past February. Friday’s bout will mark his first in his home country since a knockout win over Andrew Selby last March to position himself as the mandatory challenger. It will also serve as his first fight in his hometown since August 2018.s

Calleros steps well up in class but is riding a five-fight win streak heading into his first career title fight. The closest he’s come to previously fighting for a major belt was in a February 2017 loss to Tatsuya Fukuhara for an interim strawweight title.

The 31-year old from Monterrey last fought in early February, scoring a six-round decision win in a stay-busy affair.

Headlining the show, Juan Francisco Estrada (40-3, 27KOs) will attempt the second defense of his lineal 115-pound championship in a rematch with countryman and former titleholder Carlos Cuadras (39-3-1, 27KOs). Estrada outpointed Cuadras in their September 2017 non-title fight.

In the evening’s chief support, Nicaragua’s legendary four-division titlist Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez (49-2, 41KOs) faces Los Cabos’ Israel Gonzalez (25-3, 11KOs; no relation) in the first defense of his second junior bantamweight title reign.

Estrada-Cuadras II DAZN Weigh-In Report From Mexico City
By Jake Donovan

Published On Thu Oct 22, 2020, 02:36 PM EST

Juan Francisco Estrada is set for one rematch while firmly eyeing another.

The two-division and reigning lineal junior bantamweight champion attempts the second defense of his crown as he faces former 115-pound titlist Carlos Cuadras. Their bout—a rematch to their September 2017 non-title fight—headlines a three-title fight show, streaming Friday evening live on DAZN from Gimnasio TV Azteca in Mexico City, Mexico.

Both boxers came in at an announced 114.5 pounds (52 kg.), well under the 115-pound divisional limit.

Estrada (40-3, 27KOs) claimed the 115-pound crown following a 12-round win over Srisaket Sor Rungvisai in their championship rematch last April, avenging a points loss from 14 months prior. Friday’s bout marks his first since a 9th round stoppage of Dewayne Beamon last August in his hometown of Hermosillo, Mexico.

Cuadras (39-3-1, 27KOs) looks to regain the title he lost to Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez in September 2016. The defeat ended a reign which lasted more than two years, beginning with a 12-round win over Sor Rungvisai in May 2014.

Estrada previously served as a unified flyweight titlist, a reign which began shortly after his failed bid to claim a 108-pound title held by Nicaragua’s Gonzalez. Plans call for a rematch to their November 2012 thriller, provided they both win on Friday.

Gonzalez—a four-division champion—enters the first title defense of his second reign as a junior bantamweight title claimant, having reclaimed a belt in a one-sided stoppage of England’s Khalid Yafai this past February. He will defend his belt versus Los Cabos’ Israel Gonzalez (25-3, 11KOs; no relation).

Both boxers weighed an announced 114 pounds (51.7 kg.) for their 12-round contest.

Julio Cesar Martinez (16-1, 12KOs) appears in the first of the three title fights on the night, though his opponent’s eligibility to challenge for his flyweight belt is currently in doubt.

Moises Calleros (33-9-1, 17KOs) answered the call as a replacement for Maximino Flores, who tested positive for COVID. However, the veteran journeyman came in as a bantamweight for a flyweight fight, tipping the scale at a beefy 117.4 pounds (53.3 kg). He will have two hours to shed the weight, although the likelihood is the bout moving forward with Martinez—who weighed 111 pounds—retaining his title status and Calleros paying a fine in order to participate in a non-title fight.
