Thank you to Oscar De La Hoya and my manager Jacob Zwennes for making this great fight. Boxing fans will really like this fight because both Ortiz and I are action fighters.”“Vergil is ready to come back stronger than ever to become a world champion in this sport,” said Golden Boy Promotions Chairman and CEO Oscar De La Hoya. “He’s got the heart and dedication, and is on a mission to be a world title holder. Barboza (28-0, 10 knockouts), who resides in Los Angeles, is currently ranked No. 8 byTheRing at 140 pounds. The January 6 fight against Ndongeni will mark his debut under the Golden Boy Promotions banner.

In his last bout on February 3, his last under contract with Top Rank, Barboza defeated former world titleholder Jose Pedraza by unanimous decision. In his previous fight on July 15 of last year, Barboza defeated Danielito Zorrilla by decision.
The 32-year-old also has victories over Antonio Moran, Alex Saucedo, Tony Luis, William Silva, and Mike Alvarado. Barboza is managed by Rick Mirigian.
Ndongeni (31-3, 18 KOs), who resides in Duncan Village, South Africa, has not fought since July 8, losing by unanimous decision to prospect Ernesto ‘Tito’ Mercado. The loss to Mercado snapped a string of five consecutive victories.
Another notable loss on Ndongeni’s record was a decision defeat to Devin Haney in January 2019 in a clash of unbeaten prospects.
Another fight that was confirmed for January 6 is a 10-round super middleweight bout between Sergiy Dereyanchenko and Rowdy Legend Montgomery (10-5-1, 7 KOs) of Victorville, California.
Derevyanchenko (14-5, 10 KOs), who is originally from Feodosia, Ukraine and now resides in Brooklyn, New York, lost a close unanimous decision to Jaime Munguia on June 10 in one of the best action fights of 2023.

So why isn’t Davies fighting rolly for the title?
Rolly and Ellerbe were trying to pull an Okey doke. When rolly got that vacant title shot against Barroso it was under the stipulation that winner had to face Davies next. Rolly was gifted that win and title and immediately started talking fighting Ryan Garcia. Davies let em know that wasn't going down and he wasn't taking a step aside. Rolly was like Davies wasn't letting him have any fun and Ellerbe was trying to act like Davies wasn't doing business the right way. Davies signs with Oscar and threatens them with a lawsuit. Rolly and Ellerbe went radio silent about the situation until the WBA stepped in. Rolly somehow supplied evidence that he was injured and couldn't make his mando obligation. So that's why we are getting this fight for an interim belt. Rolly is still on the hook to face the winner else he gets stripped and winner of Davies/Barroso is full WBA champ.

Vergil Ortiz Makes Weight For First Fight In 17 Months, Faces Fredrick Lawson On Saturday

Vergil Ortiz Jr. stepped on the scale and made weight Friday for the first time in 17 months.
Ortiz officially weighed in at a career-high 156 pounds, the contracted limit for his 12-round fight Saturday night against Fredrick Lawson at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Chicago’s Lawson stepped on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s scale at 152.4 pounds for what is officially a middleweight match.
Before Friday, Ortiz had not weighed in higher than 147 pounds for any of his first 19 professional fights. The 25-year-old Ortiz has moved up from the welterweight division to junior middleweight because he and his team determined that he could no longer safely squeeze his 5-foot-10 frame down to the welterweight limit of 147 pounds.
Ortiz (19-0, 19 KOs) withdrew from his previous two fights, both against WBA world welterweight champion Eimantas Stanionis. He pulled out the first time last March due to rhabdomyolysis, a damaging muscle condition, and the second time six months ago because severe dehydration and heat exhaustion landed Ortiz in the hospital two days before he was scheduled to face Lithuania’s Stanionis (14-0, 9 KOs, 1 NC) on July 8 at AT&T Center in San Antonio.
Ortiz was diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis in March 2022, when he was forced to postpone his fight with McKinson for four months. The Grand Prairie, Texas native told BoxingScene.com recently that three specialists informed him that he is no longer afflicted with rhabdomyolysis.
DraftKings sportsbook lists Ortiz as a 25-1 favorite to beat Lawson (30-3, 22 KOs), who was born in Ghana and resides in Chicago, in a main event DAZN will stream. Each of the 34-year-old Lawson’s three losses have come by knockout or technical knockout.
The official weights for the three Ortiz-Lawson undercard fights DAZN will stream are listed below.
