A big challenge for Munguia early into the New Year.
The undefeated Jaime Munguia has his next opponent.

During the Ryan Garcia vs. Oscar Duarte main card Saturday night, DAZN announced that Munguia will take on John Ryder on January 27 at the Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, and live on DAZN.

At 27-years-old, Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June — Munguia’s only fight of 2023.
Meanwhile, Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs) went the distance with Canelo Alvarez in May before losing via unanimous decision.
“Jaime Munguia … finally we got it done,” Oscar De La Hoya said on DAZN. “Jaime Munguia vs. Ryder — the guy who went the distance with Canelo, so imagine his position. Imagine what he’s thinking, Jaime Munguia — ‘I want to knock out Ryder, what Canelo could not do.’ That will be a huge statement.”
De La Hoya has heard the clamor of Munguia stepping up in competition and taking on bigger-name opponents, but vows that the fighter is learning and improving.
“He’s learning, he’s growing, he’s maturing," De La Hoya said of Munguia. "Jaime Munguia is one of these kids that needed all of those fights under his belt. He needed that experience. Finally we have him in that position where he can fight anybody in the world."

Collazo defense set

WBO strawweight titlist Oscar Collazo (8-0, 6 KOs), 27, of Puerto Rico, will make his second defense against Nicaraguan contender Reyneris Gutierrez (10-1, 2 KOs) in the Jaime Munguia-John Ryder co-feature on Jan. 27 (DAZN, 8 p.m. ET) at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona, Golden Boy announced.

“With less than a week away for my second world title defense, I feel great and at my best moment,” Collazo said. “As always, we are very prepared and focused on what we are going to do and leave the ring with our hand raised. We have a good plan in place like all our previous fights, and we are ready to entertain in front of the people of Arizona, Puerto Rico, and on DAZN.”

Collazo, who is promoted by Hall of Fame former four-division champion Miguel Cotto, knocked out Melvin Jerusalem in the seventh round to win the 105-pound belt in May and made his first defense via sixth-round knockout of Garen Diagen in August in a homecoming defense in Puerto Rico.

Also on the main card:

  • Super middleweight prospect Darius Fulghum (9-0, 9 KOs), 27, of Houston, will face Alantez Fox (28-5-1, 13 KOs), 31, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, in a 10-rounder.
  • IBF women’s flyweight titleholder Gabriela “Sweet Poison” Fundora (12-0, 5 KOs), 21, of Coachella, California, who has signed a co-promotional deal with Golden Boy, will make her first defense against Christina Cruz (6-0, 0 KOs), 41, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • Junior featherweight David Picasso Romero (26-0-1, 15 KOs), 23, of Mexico, will face Erik Ruiz (17-9-1, 7 KOs) 31, of Oxnard, California, in a 10-rounder.

Ryder: I Need To Beat Munguia To Continue My Career, A Loss Would Signal The End

British super middleweight contender John Ryder admits that his career is likely over if he loses to Jaime Munguia this Saturday night in Phoenix, Arizona.
Munguia (42-0, 33KOs) is coming off a grueling Fight of The Year decision victory over Sergiy Derevyanchenko.
Ryder has been out of the ring since May of 2023, when he lost a bruising twelve round decision to Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
At 35-years-old, Ryder explains that he's not interested in continuing his career with back-to-back defeats - because that would likely drop him back to the domestic level.
“It really wouldn’t be ideal if I picked up two losses,” Ryder told the PA news agency. “I’ve been in this predicament before, where I have come from defeat so it’s a must-win. I need to win this to continue my career. A loss here would signal the end for me. I’m not willing to drop down levels and fight at a lower grade.
“I want to go out at a level I know I can operate at. They’re priming Munguia to fight Canelo in May and I’m looking to spoil that party.”
Ryder is hoping that his experience against world class opponents will propel him over Munguia.
“I’ve got more experience,” said Ryder. “I know it sounds strange because I have had less fights than him but I’ve got a vast experience at this level.
“Experience is one of those things you can’t buy. I’ve been in with many different styles, I’ve been in the away corner before so it’s nothing new to me and I have all the balls in my court.
“He’s had it his own way so far so I’m going to take it to him, stick it on him in the middle of the ring. I can’t let him push me back like he wants to do or let him get in a rhythm and fight his fight. He’s got a high work-rate with a good variation of punches. I wouldn’t say he’s massively quick but he throws a lot of shots so it’s going to be hard to keep the movement going and to keep rolling."

The super middleweight who wants to challenge Canelo Alvarez next and the 168-pound contender who lost his last fight to Alvarez made weight Friday for their own showdown Saturday night.
Jaime Munguia got on the Arizona Boxing & MMA Commission’s scale at 167.8 pounds for their 12-round main event at Footprint Center in Phoenix. His opponent, British southpaw John Ryder, came in at exactly the same weight, 167.8 pounds.
DAZN will stream Munguia-Ryder as the main event of a five-fight stream scheduled to start at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT).
Most sportsbooks list Tijuana’s Munguia (42-0, 33 KOs) as a 3-1 favorite to defeat London’s Ryder (32-6, 18 KOs), who lost a 12-round unanimous decision to Alvarez last May 6 at Akron Stadium in Zapopan, Mexico. Munguia will fight for the first time since his action-packed 12-round, unanimous-decision victory over Ukraine’s Sergiy Derevyanchenko (14-5, 10 KOs) last June 10 at Toyota Arena in Ontario, California.
Munguia-Derevyanchenko was voted “Fight of the Year” by BoxingScene.com for 2023.
