wtf is uber

I'm taking/using uber for the first time. How does this shyt work? So I'm in the car with my sisters, but I don't think I actually paid for the uber. It just shows the amount of the ride ($40). So when do I 'confirm' the trip? Do I mention a tip when the ride is over?
