This post was inspired by this thread: http://www.thecoli.com/threads/will-ridley-scotts-exodus-be-the-goat-whitewashing-movie.233936/ I learned a decent amount about ancient Egypt and the whitewashing of ancient history in that thread alone.

Serious question. I like to think of myself as someone that knows a little bit about everything he can do research on, but I always end up learning tons and tons of new information whenever TLR and HL goes into a discussion about black history. It's all well-referenced and everything. Did you take certain courses? Independent research? What's your favorite sources for this kind of thing? What's a good starting off point, in your opinion?

From the time I could read my mom and grandpa always had me reading about it, watching movies and docs about it.

Everything else I learned in school though. My school's history program was great. Instead of every lesson being about some white dude we learned about everything. They even taught how bad Columbus was. shyt was great. It was 88% white too they were down with the brown tho.

From my grandmother mostly. She was the one that was having me do ALL my school projects and book reports on topics in the realm of black history. I'll be real. It REALLY pissed me off at the time because sometimes I wanted to do other things.

Today I thank her for it though.

Some of the stories she used to tell me about living during the 60s as a black woman had me like :ohhh::wow::why::to:

My grandparents used to read me things all the time when I went over their house...plus, my parents would watch black history movies with me when I was a kid, so that got me into loving history...my true revealing of black history came at Morehouse and the rest is literally history for me; Since then, I've read so many books on it and all 3 of my degrees are in black history and my work to help as many people as I can with counterhegemony will be rooted in black history

That's actually funny... I remember my 10th Grade History teacher going off on a fukkin' tirade talking about how dumb and how much of a piece a shyt that guy was.

As for black history....

From school but then I got older and started to do my own reading and based on what I would read I would then formulate what I think REALLY happened.

Im not gonna lie for the longest time i never thought to question history that was taught in school. At 15 i found Sohh and lurking every sub forum i learned more and more and it also led me to research Mexican history and understand that everybody has a rich interesting history not just one group of people.

My parents. They talked to us, told us stories, anything about history that came on TV that I could see we watched and they explained. They took us to plays, and black museums. They also had me in a lot of black organization youth programs.
