The Bee
or The Washington Bee, as it was later called, was an African-American newspaper published from 1882 to 1922. Supported by William C. Chase as the head editor, The Washington Bee quickly became one of the most famous African-American newspaper in the nation. The newspaper focused on civil rights, Republican Party ideas, events at black churches and national issues facing African Americans. With the popularity of the paper and large advertisement support, The Washington Bee was able to keep up its publication, In fact, at its height, The Washington Bee at a circulation of over 9,700 subscribers.[1]
The Washington Bee faced trouble when Chase started to attack Booker T. Washington for taking a conservative stance on civil rights progress. Upset from the criticism and attacks, Washington started to provide funds to the rival newspaper the Colored American. When Chase died in 1922, the Washington Bee died with him and stopped publication just a year after his death.

Many of the black migrants who came to Chicago between 1910 and 1930 started businesses and became entrepreneurs. The "Perfect Eat" Shop, a restaurant on 47th street near South Park, is an example of such a business. It was owned by Ernest Morris, seen standing in the rear of the restaurant.
