Prolific comic book writer, artist, and entrepreneur Todd McFarlane has been hard at work on
an all new feature film reboot of his classic superhero character and franchise
Spawn for quite some time now – though by all accounts the Image Comics founder is well on his way to
completing the new movie’s script. Serving as a recasting of the entire property from the ground up following the original film of 1997 starring Michael Jai White and John Leguziamo, McFarlane appears ever certain that the production will finally get made sometime in the near future.
Despite becoming a modest box office success the first go around, the first
Spawnmovie failed to capture the attention of critics, which might be why it has taken McFarlane so long to get the ball rolling on the long-planned sequel. Originally conceived in 1998, production on the new movie has been in various stages of pre-production going on eighteen years now, though according to the latest word from the comic book creator, the project may finally be slated for production sooner rather than later.

Comic Book has just released a brief clip from an interview featured on the show with McFarlane about the status of the
Spawn reboot. When asked whether or not things were moving forward on the project, McFarlane stated point blank that “
The simple answer is yes,” and that the new movie would take the tone of the franchise in a different direction with “
a dark, R-rated, scary, badass sort of script.” McFarlane further elucidated upon what viewers can expect to see from the new movie as follows:
“
In the background, there’s this thing moving around, this boogeyman. That boogeyman just happens to be something that you and I, intellectually, know is Spawn. Will he look like he did in the first movie? No. Will he have a supervillain he fights? No. He’s going to be the spectre, the ghost.“
Given the fact that McFarlane has been working on a feature length followup to the original
Spawn film ostensibly since its own respective release in 1997, everything that the comic book creator has to say about the new movie should be taken with a grain of salt. Then again, the original character and superhero property has continued to be one of the top selling original titles from Image Comics ever since its inception in 1992, which might yet serve to pique the interest of any film studios interested in green-lighting their own potential superhero blockbuster event.
It would be more than exciting to see another classic comic book character not associated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe or the DC Extended Universe make its way to the big screen. That being said, the
Spawn reboot is still in its infancy from a pre-production perspective, so it might not be time quite yet to get any hopes for the movie’s eventual release too high.
