Donald Trump wanted to give the Central Park Five the chair.
Now he doesn’t want the city to give them a dime.
In an exclusive piece for the Daily News, Trump quoted an unnamed detective who called the $40 million settlement the city has agreed to pay the wrongfully convicted quintet “the heist of the century.”
“The recipients must be laughing out loud at the stupidity of the city,” Trump, who is worth about $4 billion, wrote. “Speak to the detectives on the case and try listening to the facts. These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels.”
Trump, who fanned the racial fury against the five black and Latino teens a quarter century ago with full-page ads demanding the death penalty, also expressed no remorse for his actions.
Instead, Trump wrote, “The justice system has a lot to answer for, as does the City of New York regarding this very mishandled disaster.”
The men exonerated in the 1989 Central Park jogger rape — Kharey Wise, Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Raymond Santana and Yusef Salaam — attend a 2012 screening of the documentary about them, 'The Central Park Five,' in New York.
Trump Calls Central Park 5 Settlement A 'Disgrace'
Donald Trump isn't happy about the news that the "Central Park five" are getting a $40 million settlement after they were wrongfully convicted of raping a jogger 25 years ago.
The five black and Latino men, who were then teens, were convicted in 1989 of raping a 28-year-old woman in Central Park. But DNA evidence and a confession by a serial rapist later cleared Antron McCray, Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson, Yusuf Salaa and Raymond Santana in 2002, after the five had spent as long as 13 years in prison.
In an op-ed published in the New York Daily News on Saturday, Trump calls the settlement a "disgrace."
My opinion on the settlement of the Central Park Jogger case is that it’s a disgrace. A detective close to the case, and who has followed it since 1989, calls it “the heist of the century.”
Settling doesn’t mean innocence, but it indicates incompetence on several levels. This case has not been dormant, and many people have asked why it took so long to settle? It is politics at its lowest and worst form.
Trump doesn't directly say he thinks the men are actually guilty of the crime they were wrongfully convicted of, but he does say, "These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels."
The five men initially confessed to the crime, but they recanted their confession at trial and said it was brought about after they were coerced by police officers who did not allow their parents to be present during their lengthy and exhausting interrogation, according to Democracy Now.
On May 1, 1989, while the case was in the media spotlight, Trump took out full-page advertisements in four New York newspapers calling for the return of the death penalty and saying that "criminals of every age'' who raped the woman in Central park should "be afraid," according to the New York Times.
Last year, TheGrio.com reported that Trump tweeted, then deleted, the question: "what were the men doing in the park, playing checkers?

- He tweeted and deleted a post earlier in the year about the Baltimore protesters being thugs(maybe its still up maybe it wasn't deleted)...
- Was reported to have said "laziness is a trait in blacks" and laughed at the thought of black guys "counting my money" and that he only wants "little short guys that wear yarmulkes every day.”
- Salon‘s Justin Elliot (4/28/11) traced Trump’s racism back to the 1970s, when the Justice Department repeatedly alleged racial discrimination by Trump Management Company, where Trump served as president. According to a New York Times report (10/16/73) about the federal case:
The government contended that Trump Management had refused to rent or negotiate rentals “because of race and color.” It also charged that the company had required different rental terms and conditions because of race and that it had misrepresented to blacks that apartments were not available.
- The case I mentioned above at the start of this post.....He was taking out full page newspaper ads calling for the execution of these young Black men who were minors from the ages of 14 to 16
- The entire Obama Birth-certificate debacle that went on for years with Trump the main instigator.
