Sadly Its because we're still not used to seeing ourselves depicted in certain ways yet. Simple as that. I saw the trailer during the game last night like most everybody else and I was taken aback because it was kinda strange seeing black faces depicted in a movie outside the normal stereotypes. It kinda reminds me of when an elder black person gets excited over seeing a young black person wearing a business suit or doctor uniform because its something he/she rarely sees. Its sad actually when you really think about it

Black people are still mainly used to seeing the same stereotypical images over and over again whether in audio or visual form. We're still used to seeing ourselves at the bottom. As inferior. The ghetto. The hood. Rachetness. The sidekick. The help. The rapper. The athlete. The slave. The convict. The thug.

In 2017, the Black Panther movie is a breath of fresh air because its something totally different than what we're used to seeing. Also, in 2017 this being a "breath of fresh" air is sad to me. Why is it that images of black people outside of stereotypes are damn near non-existent to the point we're all :krs:when we finally see something different?

The answer is that we don't control our own image and "media propaganda" is constantly being used to demonize / criminalize the black image:

If You Are Black Its Imperative That You Are Aware Of What "Media Propaganda" Is

The world is constantly being presented with the image the white man wants to be presented of the black man. This mainly effects how see feel about ourselves and each other. Constantly seeing ourselves represented in a stereotypical and negative light affects our collective self-esteem and we don't even know it. We don't know it because it affects the subconscious. Thats the power of media.

This isn't a thread to hate on the movie at all and I will go support it but as I was reading the thread about the trailer I felt different about it than the rest of you. I don't think most of you realize the big picture and exactly WHY you are so excited about this movie. Its because it represents a new image that you've never seen of yourself and culture and honestly I'm not too thrilled that we have such limited access to positive and heroic images of ourselves that we shyt our pants when we do see it. White people are used to seeing themselves portrayed as superheroes. They aren't awe struck when the newest film is released. Little white boys and girls have plenty of positive and heroic images of themselves. Its not surprising for them like it is for us. Its the norm.

Us seeing ourselves outside of the stereotypes HAS TO BECOME THE NORM. Movies like this has to be more frequent. More powerful and positive messages and images of ourselves are needed for the self-esteem of the youth. Young black kids already have the most limited "circumference of awareness" when it comes to having a wide variety of images of themselves. That has to change.

I can't, I'm too cynical. It rubs me the wrong way that folks are ecstatic over this like a major hurdle was cleared. Hey everybody, we have our very own comic book movie. Oh great, I'm represented on the big screen by ficticious characters with superpowers. Went from cacs with capes to Blacks with capes. Seeing grown women cry over Wonder Woman on the big screen verified just how infantile women have become in recent years despite so much progress. That said, I hate to say it, and I mean no disrespect towards anyone planning on seeing this film, but that sh!t is immature and infantile IMO.

Congratulations cacs, you've succeeded in infecting Black people with geek culture. Matter fact, I tip my hat to you cacs, you've successfully damaged Black people's self esteem and self worth so well throughout the years that a comic book film featuring a Black cast is now inspiring to a large segment of us. Nas' I Can comes to mind for some reason, but I cant rock to it now.

Coming to America, although not a Sci Fi flick was pretty important at the time.

I also don't think Spike Lee gets enough credit for School Daze, Do the right thing , or Malcolm X.

Don't forget we had about a 12 to 15 year run with the Cosby show and "A different world"

In the Silver Lining
Imagery............why does the average young black female want to go to Europe, Caribbean, Dubai....then maybe sometine in future Africa.....it's imagery......that trailer was very telling. If you can't understand what decades of mass programming can do to psyches then I don't know what to tell you.......powerful stuff....

For the naysayers in this thread, my soul did shed a tear, because it was very spiritual and psychological even as a grown ass man....but I don't kid myself that Disney is the one that will profit billions off this movie.....not to mention the fact that we shouldn't have to wait for Marvel to "greenlight" what Afro-Futurism is/should be. I said it in the other thread, this should energize in people a desire to "reimagine" what the development of Africa can be like....because as you can see...and Umar and a few other Hotep and scholarly pundits have eluded to it....the future of AAs and Diaspora is connected to the future of Africa. It starts in the psyche though....
