The constant need or encouragement for newer rappers to make 'new york sounding music' or 'bring back new york' or 'restore the feeling' or 'bring back that golden era rap' is a huge part of why New York has lost its identity... its basically in a stagnant state to the point that some rappers have even said fukk it and became impromptu Drill artists or basically rapping from the boroughs of New Atlanta.

ASAP was the only glimpse of what the future or what the future of new york hip hop could look like if creatively the newer artists are allowed to thrive and find THEIR own sound that connect with their own generations within their own communities and in effect pattern and patent a style that others can connect with cross the country and build a movement thru the internet. Now for those who will say, well ASAP took a lot of influence from other places ... well isn't that hip hop. You become linfluenced by something then in turn ... make your own lane/brand/wave and your own twist on it?

Waste men like Papoose, Troy Ave, uncle Murda are simply lost. Living in 1994 or 2004. Haven't yet made it to 2014 yet and could never even fathom the future of where music is going. Unfortunately for a lot of you ole heads on this site ... since I know you live in denial. The Youth drives music influences and choices. Its not for nothing why we have Migos, Young Thug and others currently buzzing on the come up because of the support from these younger people who want to be different, unique and connect with something that they can identify as theirs or themselves. While we have others that have no avid support from the teens/younger generations not having that movement/buzz currently.

Simply put to not stray too far away from the point.

The idea of the 'New York Sound' has completely STOPPED the progress of hip hop in New York and created a cycle of rappers choosing between trying to sound like other regions or trying to time travel back into 2003.

Sadly, New York is not a place where creative minds and trend setters are born. Its the home to the lost nyggas, swagless flattop dudes and followers.

Weigh in brehs.

There's no such thing as a "New York sound" anymore. At least not in this technology age.
nikkas like Troy Ave and Joey Badass are just using it as like a gimmick.
There's way more access to other styles and shyt like that, it's not the hub it used to be where all we heard was other NY music all day.
shyt just kind of evolved and honestly I ain't even mad at that.

I think we are going to see a rise in NY street rap soon due to success of Hot nikka.

but i gotta give credit to ASAP Mob, FBZ and them for making great records that opened people's ideas to what NYC sounds like now.

808s and hi hats doesn't = atlanta or south. nor does grills. or melodies. or whatever.

Why this topic again? Do you even like the music from these other regions?

IMO, I think artists need to understand there is not one NY sound. BDP didnt sound like EPMD, Tribe didnt sound like Wu Tang. G Rap dont sound like Busta, 50 doesnt sound like Jay. All those artists/ groups were able to find a sound/style that worked for them and pushed forward. Maybe ignoring the outside noise of fans/ critics of what a NY rapper should sound like may be beneficial, because those artists I named and many more did not follow the same path.

The only nikka tryna recreate 2003 is Troy Ave, wouldve made more sense if you said the 90s considering everybody is on that wave, especially young nikkas like Joey Trashbag who aren't even old enough to have memories of what the 90s were like.

dikkride ASAP Mob for being so creative in their sound when the first single from their album was a 90s sounding track brehs.

I agree with you as far as NYC old heads not having growth but, I don't agree with the youth being the ones to bring the change. In reality it's two things happening. Whoever plays the songs, are deciding what gets played based on money, and trying to be the first to have a song. Then its the people who own labels. They are the ones who will let what gets to the masses and what doesn't. Most of these people are older people. The truth is most of the music that is popular now, is not new in style, and has been done before. Its just people who decide what gets shown to the masses want a quick buck, so they choose artists who have music that they can make money off of.

The more "******ish" the artist is, the more love they get from young people because these artists personify that "i don't give a fukk about shyt" attitude. Most young people are not political, thinking about sex and being safe, not being drug addicts, etc. They just want to get fukked up, and fukk anything moving, and get money. They don't see the after effects of living like this, and don't want to hear it. Its called being young, and ignorant, we all went through it. The difference is now, none of the consequences are being spoken, and everything is about enjoying yourself, and do what you want. The artists who are pushed are the people who personify this mind state, and they happen to be young. This is really why the music sounds the way it does now, its easier to sell. I was watching the ASAP Rocky documentary, and he said he's proud to be a ******. Yet, I don't think he really knew what he was saying. I love ASAP Rocky, and his crew, but I understand why they are being pushed, they don't have anything to say besides "let's feel good", and they help keep that "******ish" image going. But, in 5 years his company will find a new ****** next year. That is the sad part about these young rappers who just rap the "fun life". Because they are a dime a dozen, once their record companies get their money recouped, they get rid of them, and find a new ******, because that is the name of the game. Keep bringing in new "talent", and keep robbing them since they just want to have fun. The longer they stay in the business the more they realize there is more to life then partying, and then they question whats happening, then want to rap about it but, by then they are kicked to the curb. The company found a new ****** to hype up, and the "fans" think the other guy is "OLD", and played out.
