Great track. The part about spray painting the word fresh is :ohlawd:

There's truth in the thread title statement. It's really about how well an artist can channel their experiences into something that touches people. Many of the greats in history drew from their suffering to fuel their art. But if you have no talent you can suffer like crazy but not be able to express it in a way that is artistic.

It's a good point especially if you are articulate enough and courageous enough to express yourself lyrically. Nas keeps it real.

Something similar was said in the movie "The Five Heartbeats" about Duck.

He's right. Watching an artist's life play out makes the music more compelling. The music is like the script to the visual.

We watched Nas make some of his best art after he got spit on by critics/peers, after him mother passed away, after he went through a divorce, etc.

It's kind of common knowledge that Artist's who go through turmoil channel it into their art and it usually makes it better.

Nas probably knows better than anyone, three of his albums which are strongly considered classics all came from personal turmoil.

Illmatic- Watched his best friend and little brother shot. Held Ill Will in his arms as he bled out. Saw countless friends be locked up, watched crack desimate his community, didn't even think he'd live to see 25.

Stillmatic- Mother dying of Cancer, his greatest adversary sleeping with the mother of his child, endured slander and the attempt to rewrite history and say his catalogue was "garbage".

Life Is Good- Public divorce. Child Support. Ailimony. A newborn Son he couldn't even see. The tax issues. His daughter growing up before him and becoming a woman.

Here My Dear by Marvin Gaye comes to mind. Also The Wind, Warren Zevon's last album. He learned he had pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the lungs) and then went straight to the studio. Finished the album but died two weeks before the album release date.
:wow::mjcry:

Also, Dilla's Donuts had a similar story. Man I can't imagine working while on my death bed...

Keep getting phone calls so getting distracted but....

I think there's some truth to that statement, some of the best artists have been ones that have suffered. Sometimes if you actually have gone through something you can express it even more real and rawly than using your imagination. Many of the greats have had this, Pac self explanatory, but even someone like KRS-One, without police corruption and brutality you don't get Sound Of The Police.

This is a short small comment, have a lot more to say and will be back later.

100 percent, but I think if you take an artist that suffered and an artist who hasn't with the same writing talent the 1 who has will have the better work. Because you grow in emotional intelligence, relatability, sensitivity, knowledge, wisdom etc.

I'm gonna say a lot more shyt in this thread over time cause it's really a topic where could be in depth discussion.

Nas was actually inspired by Hear My Dear for Life Is Good. But that is a great example though with Marvin. It's a very diverse topic, a lot of areas to cover.
