Undercover Miami police officers posing as customers ended a month-long sting before dawn Friday with the arrests of bartenders, managers and strippers at an Upper East Side men’s club called Wonderland.
In all, a dozen employees of Wonderland, 7778 Biscayne Blvd., were hauled away Friday morning by members of Miami’s Safe Club task force, which also include officers with the state’s division of Alcohol, Beverage and Tobacco.
The charges range from narcotics sales to selling liquor after hours to offering prostitution.
“Our special investigation section visited multiple times. They made buys and got to know the girls,” Miami Police Chief Manuel Orosa said.
Police said the investigation was sparked by a complaint that Wonderland had been operating later than the time permitted on its operating license. The club’s website says Wonderland is open until 6 a.m.
There was some confusion early Friday about what the permitted hours of operation are, but police believe Wonderland has been keeping its doors open well past dawn, until 8 a.m.
Police also said strippers were offering sex in private rooms upstairs. The club’s website boasts of its recent renovation to 15,000 square feet, gourmet meals and entertainment including football games and boxing viewing.
Wonderland offers a number of private rooms with purple velour curtains that it dubs ultra skybox seats, a large bar with several big screen televisions, and four stages.
The iconic site on the Boulevard, which sits in the middle of a massive neighborhood rebirth and just across the street from the old Immigration and Naturalization Services building, has been a number of different venues over the years.
The club’s theme has morphed with the times. A decade ago it changed from the old X-rated p*ssycat Theatre to a gay club called Boulevard Nightclub. When that didn’t work out, it changed to Wonderland, an all-female strip club.
Miami-Dade County property records show the club is owned by Gayety Theatres Inc., which is owned by Leroy Griffith. He’s the outspoken owner of Miami Beach’s Club Madonna, which has fought Bach city leaders who for years have tried to shut it down.
Miami City Manager Daniel Alfonso said Wonderland’s permits are in order, but the city is looking to see if it has violated its certificate of use. Alfonso is looking to see whether he can revoke Wonderland’s license, which would essentially shut it down. That wouldn’t happen before an administrative hearing before the state division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco.
