Here's the making of this project, where I chronicle the musical thoughts and what went into selecting certain beats n etc.....
The Making of ShutterTeknology 2.0 (NEW MUSIC!)
The Making of ShutterTeknology 2
1.
Gutter Remix – I originally wrote this too a leftover beat from the 1st ShutterTeknology. The alternate version of that beat was used for the original Gutter intro on my 1st mixtape. (Best of Shutterworth Da G.O.D) I took the 1st 4 bars of the original and then wrote a bunch of new bars. A week later I ended up sending a track to Tek and also asking for a beat, but on some dope dark street type shyt. He sent the Gutter Remix beat afterwards and as soon as I heard that beat I knew I should use those lyrics for this shyt. It came out real dope. One of my favorite tracks. All my intros are dope as fukk and this is no different.
2.
Waiting For You – I remember hearing this beat when Tek posted it in a thread from a project he just dropped. The sample was fire and the whole vibe it created was something I knew I could spit to. Tek felt the joint and then added another dimension to it when he put the beatbox element on the beginning part of the 2nd verse. Song was dope before that, but when he did that, he took it over the top and made it classic.
3.
Wake Up - This was one of the beats that Tek sent while we were in the beginning stages of the project. It came in a group with about 6 beats total. This was one of them that really stood out to me. I asked him for some soulful street shyt and he delivered. The beat sounded sad to me, but kinda hopeful in a way too. shyt’s crazy because the beat matches the topic so good. Track came out real dope, but once again Tek comes through and adds his magic to it with the scratches and vocal sample. Another classic track.
4.
Abuse the Mic - This is another leftover beat from ShutterTeknology 1. shyt was always dope to me, but shyt happens and I never got a chance to write to it back then. It was one of those situations where you got a bunch of dope beats sent to you, but you only really got time to focus on like 2 or 3. Yeah, shyt like that. I went the whole traditional emcee route with the song direction. One of those joints where you can just spit too. Nothing special, just go in. The chorus on this joint is dope to me as well as the overall aggressive flow. This was actually the 1st song that I recorded for this project. One of my favorites songs as well.
5.
On Time Interlude – I originally heard this beat in a Tunnel thread where we were talking about dope samples and shyt. nikkas were posting Attack On Titan sample flips. From what I can remember most of the beats were cool, but Tek’s joint stood out the most to me. Like he kept it basic, but still really captured the essence of the sample while infusing his classic boom bap approach to hiphop. I thought it’d make a decent interlude to spit a lil verse too. Out of everybody that I’ve worked with the biggest gap between projects is with Tek Beatz. So I used that as the theme for the interlude.
6.
Warzone feat Kese Soprano – This is a beat that I remember hearing a nice while back but, I cant recall anything about that time. It could have been from an old batch of beats. It was cool for a dope verse, but not something I would have picked for myself. Tek sent it and it had a dope Kese Soprano verse and hook on it with a spot left open on the 2nd verse. That’s what really drove me to write to this joint. I had a verse ready within an hour and recorded it the next day. Switched up the energy in order to contrast with Kese’s smooth laidback approach. Dope collab and builds off the one from the 1st ShutterTeknology
7.
Boom Bap Bullies – This is another leftover beat from ShutterTeknology 1. This beat was always dope as fukk. Real hard street hiphop vibe. Track has that vintage eastcoast feel. Black Droog said it sounded like something Sean Price (R.I.P) would have done due to some of the lines and overall vibe it had. After that I felt like it was mission accomplished.
8.
Lonely at the Top – I first heard this beat when Tek posted up a thread with some Luthor Vandross flips he did. I think it was like 3 beats, but this one was the best one to me. Great emotionally sad soulful vibe. Took a long time to figure out what to spit to it, but then one day it hit me and this was the result. Another one of my favorite joints and probably another classic.
9.
Anytime – This beat is from a tape Tek dropped a couple years ago. shyt was always crazy dope to me. Finally found it again and decided to make something happen. I listened to this instrumental all week before writing and recording the song. Definitely another favorite of mine.
10.
Only One – Dope sample and just overall smooth beat. Tek posted it up a while ago. I decided to make another chick joint, but without the story approach of Waiting For You. Track came out dope.
11.
Tunnel Gang Interlude The verse was originally to a song that was never released on an official project. It just chilled on my soundcloud. The original concept came about a few years ago from a Clanarchy suggestion. He wanted to see if I could spit a verse incorporating the names of some of the Tunnel forum members. There’s actually 3 different versions of this song, but this is the best one. The final result is another dope interlude verse, but with a concept rhyme scheme halfway through giving props to my people. The intro beat was a sample I sent to Tek to add. It’s from one of the most popular anime movies out there, but old school as hell. I remember watching it back in ’95 or 96 when my pops rented that shyt. It stuck with me ever since.
12.
Rather Be 2 The original Rather Be was done to a Ran Dakroyd aka SexJesus beat for a project that never fully materialized. I thought the concept was dope, so I asked Tek if he had another beat similar to the original. He sent this one and everything worked out good. There’s also a version of this song with my verse from the original Rather Be track on it which sounded dope as well.
13.
Real Spit– I set out to make a classic with this project or at least end up creating a real dope all around album. A posse cut with a bunch of different Tunnel forum members from various regions would be the perfect grand finale. I always wanted to do a posse cut and you need at least 5 people to make that happen. The biggest collaborations I’ve ever been able to make was with 3 different emcees. The beat was from a batch that Tek sent during the middle stages of the project. shyt was dope and had this raining day hiphop street vibe to it. I believe it also samples a Temprees record as well. Now the 1st verse I spit was from a track I did back in 2010. My wife actually produced the beat for that shyt. Track was cool, but the sound quality was lacking. I always liked the verse though and felt like it shouldn’t be wasted. I dug it up and used it for the 1st verse on this since I wasn’t sure if this track would end up happening. Collabs can be hit or miss sometimes. Tek made most of the collabs happen by hitting up Tryf Bindope, Dr. Madness, and Wali. While I reached out to Laif myself. The end result was sick. I added a new verse to the end with the tracklist concept and even considered taking off my 1st verse due to the length of the track, but Tek liked it and said it should stay so everything worked out. He put the scratches and vocal samples at the end and it really closed out the track on some epic posse shyt.
14.
My Bonus Track – This track really was a bonus song lol. It was the final song recorded due to Tek sending this beat after the posse cut was finished. He was experimenting with this new Drum kit that DeadBassRecords (another Tunnel head that I’ve worked with) just dropped. The beat was sick as fukk and its style is a true testament to how versatile TekBeatz is as a producer. We gave you a whole album full of dope boom bap beats, but as a special treat, we end it off with a dope soulful trap inspired instrumental. There have been albums in the past that will have bonus tracks that are really just leftover joints that didn’t make the original cut. I wanted to switch it up and make a bonus track that was on par with the rest of the album even if the production is slightly different. The track is soulful and hard, but has an underlying pain to it. I knew I had to spit some real shyt with substance and with everything going on in this country it felt like it was the natural thing to do. It’s sort of like Wake Up 2, but directed more at the law enforcement and the system that enslaves us.
Overall Thoughts.
I feel like it’s better than the 1st ShutterTeknology album, due to the broader range of lyrics and production. You actually have some potential commercial sounding joints on this one, whereas the 1st one had more of an underground street emcee approach. Don’t get me wrong. I still think this one has that approach as well. It’s just that it’s done much better this time around. I feel like we both grew as an artist and producer from 3 years ago so the wait was worth it. We started this project in late February 2016 and finished it up late July 2016. Not bad for 4 months of grinding. Enjoy.
