John Davis will produce the cop movie through his Davis Entertainment banner

New Line has acquired the rights to the “Shaft” franchise and is developing a reboot of the popular police property with producer John Davis of Davis Entertainment, TheWrap has learned.

Gordon Parks directed the 1971 movie starring Richard Roundtree, while John Singleton directed Paramount’s reboot featuring Samuel L. Jackson back in 2000.

Jackson’s NYPD detective John Shaft played the nephew of the original John Shaft, and it’s unclear whether New Line’s reboot will continue the Shaft lineage or start from scratch. Either way, a new actor will be cast as the African-American protagonist.

Shaft could be the hero America needs at a time when the country is fraught with racial tension in the wake of fatal incidents in Ferguson, Missouri (Michael Brown), Staten Island, New York (Eric Garner) and Sanford, Florida (Trayvon Martin).

It’s early days, so there’s no word on who might inherit Shaft’s “duty to please that booty,” but Hollywood’s pool of talented black actors has never been deeper, from Anthony Mackie and Jamie Foxx to David Oyelowo and Chadwick Boseman.

Christian Bale, Jeffrey Wright, Vanessa Williams, Elizabeth Banks and Toni Collette co-starred in Singleton’s “Shaft,” which grossed $70 million at the domestic box office, indicating a healthy appetite for the vibrant character.

Davis is no stranger to franchise reboots, having produced the original “Predator” as well as the 2010 movie “Predators” starring Adrien Brody. Davis’ upcoming films include Guy Ritchie’s “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” with Henry Cavill, “Victor Frankenstein” with James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe, and David O. Russell’s “Joy,” which stars Jennifer Lawrence.

New Line also has experience with reboots thanks to the “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “Friday the 13th” horror franchises, as well as the upcoming “Vacation” reboot starring Ed Helms.

So aside from the normal reaction that comes from it, since it's happening and since they kinda already tried it before 15 years ago, who should play Shaft? Oleweyo? Boseman? Or some unknown. I think now would be a good time for Shaft tho

Hmm I dunno it all depends who the get for the director and who's casted as Shaft before I can comment. That said huge misstep not making a sequel to the Samuel L Jackson flick shyt was dope.

Yeah it always confused me as to why they didn't make a sequel to that. clearly it's too late now. Ava Duverney would be a great pick to direct it

Idris would be cool but I don't think Denzel would do it. Just doesn't seem like something he'd be interested in at this point in his career

Yeah Denzel just got that cool nikka shyt down to a T:myman:

I'm trying to think but I can't even think of a relative unknown that they could cast and I honestly wouldn't believe a cat like Jamie Foxx in the role.

This shyt screams Idris:noah:

No homo tho:whoa:

Yeah that's it to me, he's a favorite actor of mine but he would force it. Overacting ass Sam Jack was surprisingly calm and cool in the reboot:wow:

Sam is a good actor and knows when to reign it in and being cool isn't an issue with him. I can see Jamie just trying too hard tho and that would be bad for the part. Boseman would be a good pick because he doesn't force his cool in anything I've seen him in.
