relocating your family for a job

anybody here have experience with this? ive recently gotten an opportunity that might require me uprooting my wife and making her start a new job elsewhere. its not 100% sure yet but its a very real possibility and im not sure about it. i would be making an extra $15k a year if i do it but i may end up working 8 hours away from home and having to move there permanently til i can transfer back near nyc.

anybody have to do this recently? what was your family's reaction? was it worth it? did you want to move back home?

no but they give u state housing for as little as $100 a month until u can find a decent place to live. its for the state corrections department. i got my canvass letter and should be doing my 1 on 1 interview within the next 1 or 2 months. the more research i do tho the more it seems like i may have to move.

its too early to tell exactly where but it will be far no matter what. i can put in for a transfer to my closest state prison which is sing sing but it could take up to 2 years. what im most worried about is telling my wife that we have to move and she has to quit her job and live at least 3 hours away from any family. especially since we are also planning on having a baby.

i just did it recently. the company was bought out and we had the option of collection unemployment/severance package or moving from philly to minnesota. they gave me 10 k in relocation money .which was the main reason i did it. was able to ship my car, get a condo, etc. now im ready to move back. only because i have a 2 year old daughter and want her to be closer to the family. its terrible missing birthdays and not having a babysiter. only coming home once a year cause flying is expensive. dude 8 hours is not that bad. im 19 hours hours away. just make sure you have them negotiate your relocation package

yea that sucks. i know 8 hours or even 3 arent relatively bad, but i wouldnt be able to commute daily and i would have to leave my wife alone for 4 - 5 days at a time or move her up with me which is the alternative. the problem with that is she just became a teacher and loves her school so i would have to ask her to quit her job and start somewhere fresh where she doesnt know anybody. thats what i think is my biggest concern. she is very close to her mom and family and uprooting her would not be easy on her.

also, im not getting a relocation package. the most they will do for me is get me state housing for really cheap until i can find a permanent place to stay.

yea she is already not feeling the fact i have to go to albany for 8 weeks for paramilitary training, even tho i get to come home on weekends. if i tell her im stationed 3 - 6 hours or even 8 hours away and we have to move, its gonna be tough on her.

yo talk to them to try to help pay for relocation. i knew someone who moved and she owned her house. when she relocated, she had her job pay for her rent until she sold her house

i moved my tribe up 1200 miles to where i am and while i am gucci I'm not sure how to gauge them. at the end of the day, your the man, and what you say goes. if she don't like it, then she can either adjust or leave. but then again, thats just me. maybe y'all work as an actual team. I'm the sole provider for them so their input is limited . plus what i look like passing an opportunity to live in massachusetts just to stay in alabama

most state prisons are in the middle of nowhere in hick towns. if you're from NYC, you might not like that lifestyle. It certainly doesn't appeal to me. if it were me,I'd try to find a gig where I live especially if you want to live near the fam.

yea theres only a handful within a 2 hour drive of the city. im willing to drive 2 hours a day for a few years til i get transfered to sing sing or bedford hills. those 2 are less than an hour from the bronx. some of those shyts are deep as fukk tho. still, the benefits, pay, and the promotional opportunities make it enticing for me. Lieutenants make up to 100k a year and im more than smart enough to move up.

im a tell u right now. moving is not cheap. my car alone cost 700 to ship. how much u think its gonna cost to move all your stuff? Talk to your wife first. she may be down to move. how is this move benefiting you? you said you would be making 15 k more. but would you be able to hold down the bills and stuff until she found a job?? if it was me, i would wait til. the summer when school is out and she isnt working. then she has the whole summer to look for a new gig.
