http://raprehab.com/rap-music-brainwashed-youth-and-the-power-of-hip-hop-culture/

As a Hip Hop purist, I’ve always hated the fact that most commercial rap music promotes negative images and messages. Having used Hip Hop culture as a medium to empower youth for the last 15 years, I’ve seen first hand how mainstream rap impacts young impressionable minds. It is disturbing. Having also worked with incarcerated youth, I’ve seen how rap that glorifies irresponsible and criminal behavior has become the soundtrack to their daily lives.

The music industry’s role in promoting negative music has been a hot topic for many years. I’ve personally written about it extensively. What is too often under reported is how young people, including incarcerated youth, are directly impacted by the music. Although the overall effect is easy to imagine, specific details are extremely revealing. Here are some of my personal observations gathered from years of work with teens in traditional schools and juvenile detention centers.

  • When asked to explain what Hip Hop consists of, the majority of kids list violence and gangs as being elements of Hip Hop.
  • When asked to list what their favorite artists rap about, the overwhelming majority list guns, sex, violence, cars, thugs, jewelry, and money as popular topics.
  • When asked to name rappers with positive lyrics, most kids name Drake, Tupac, and Kendrick Lamar (within the last year) but seem unaware of any others.
  • When asked to name female rappers, the overwhelming majority can only think of Nicki Minaj.
  • When asked if rap music influences them, the majority say yes.
  • When asked if they know anyone who tries to emulate what rappers do, 99% say they know one or more people who do.
  • The majority of girls say that most boys seem to learn how to treat girls from their favorite rappers.
  • The majority of boys say that rap music has taught them that girls cannot be trusted.
  • Over half of kids use slang they picked up from the newest songs in their everyday conversations.
  • 99% of kids get all of their music for free. Most have never even owned a CD.
  • The majority of kids only know commercial rappers and aren’t very familiar with the underground scene.
  • Most kids don’t realize that they can use the internet to discover new artists and end up only acknowledging rappers who top the charts.
  • Half of all youth state that they’ve never heard rappers use big words.
  • The overwhelming majority of incarcerated youth say they listen to “gangsta shyt” to pump them up to get high or commit a crime.
  • Over half of incarcerated youth refer to rappers who glorify negativity (ex: Chief Keef, Gucci Mane, Lil’ Boosie, 2 Chainz, etc) as “real shyt” while rappers whose content is more progressive are labeled “weak” or “corny”.
  • Over half of incarcerated youth dream of becoming rap stars when they get out of jail.
  • During rap writing sessions, most kids write about the same topics commercial artists rap about. 99% of incarcerated youth have an extremely difficult time writing about anything else besides the streets.
  • Half of incarcerated youth say that slow and bass heavy instrumentals (trap music) inspire them to do negative things. They say “something” in the beat has an effect on them.
The previous data is usually gathered within the first few days of working with youth. After I’ve had enough time to teach kids about Hip Hop culture, the music industry, and the “Commercial Rap to Prison Pipeline”, I expose them to pioneers and iconic Hip Hop artists as well as new underground and independent rappers, of whom most of them have never heard before. Some of these artists include:

Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, Run DMC, Public Enemy, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, Dead Prez, Pharoahe Monch, Homeboy Sandman, Sa-Roc, Supastition (AKA Kam Moye), Jay Electronica, and Ill Camille.

After having spent a few sessions with me:

  • The overwhelming majority of kids say that the artists I’ve introduced them to sound better than commercial rappers.
  • Most kids wonder why radio doesn’t play these artists in heavy rotation.
  • Most say that they didn’t know rappers could speak intelligently and still sound good.
  • About half of the kids state that mainstream rappers sound stupid in comparison to these newly discovered artists.
  • Many of the kids who are aspiring rappers ask me what they can do to become better lyricist.
  • The majority of them are mad at the mainstream music industry once they’re exposed to alternatives and conclude that the industry is intentionally promoting music to “brainwash” them.
These findings are both disturbing and hopeful. As I’ve stated in previous articles, mainstream rap music can’t be blamed for all of today’s social ills as unemployment, poverty, gangs, drugs, failing school system, and institutionalized racism are the real culprits. However, mainstream rap’s impact on youth cannot be ignored and has undoubtedly contributed to an already troubled society. Still, when seeking solutions and innovative ways to effectively reach our youth, it’s good to know that Hip Hop culture, in the right hands, can have the kind of impact on young people that may help to save their lives.

like all popular music hiphop music is used by the zionists to distract and confuse the youth. they only promote the negative music in fear that the positive music might spark a movement to uplift minorities/ the poor community.
they promote only the negative music to maintain a state of confusion within the black community. like gangbanging and drug dealing. they spend millions of dollars on this campaign which has been successful in driving positive underground. and resulting in traumatized black communities...

for this to change the black community has to put pressure on the record labels.
a lot of these rappers are college educated but just make the garbage music cause they're more likely to get a record deal rapping the garbage..

I agree with what you said except that the black community needs its OWN record labels. When Motown was making music, it influenced the way other labels had to do with their artists. Motown led the way for black music for decades. Once white labels came in they started to dilute and corrupt our music. The rise of gangsta rap was supported first by Jewish men in the music industry and I am saying this as someone who is not anti-Semitic. but I don't believe that zionists are hebrews to begin with...but that is another topic. If you look at a lot of black shows on TV in the past like Good Times, they had Jewish executives. They have been in control of our media since the 1970s. They understand from Hitler's use of the media to push out his propaganda that controlling media and people's perception is more important than anything. He successfully used the media to spew out negatives about Jews...saying they were greedy, disloyal, saying that they are the reason why Germany lost WW 1 and the reason why Germany was in an economic depression. He even used cartoons to indoctrinate the kids. That is why Jews are so scared about not controlling the media...since they then they understood that they must dominate all forms of media. We do not own media outlets to combat the onslaught of negativity media images that not just black kids see, but all other races see to shape their perception of us. This is very dangerous. Its odd that kids said that positive rap is coming from Drake, Pac, Kendrick Lamar...its most of the rap I listen too. Most of the time I am jamming some old school RnB/Soul from 60s-90s, some 80s musics from rock to pop, I can't listen to a Young Jeezy album over and over again. What you take in can change your perception of things.

We as a people have really fallen off and it starts with our culture. We have a lot more pride in ourselves as a people because our culture, especially our music which was all we had influenced how we felt about each other. Most of our music before gangsta rap was about treating another woman right, having a good time, being a black and proud. If you think about it, gangsta rap was not a needed genre. Now it has splintered off into ratchet rap, trap rap, mind on drugs rap, etc. I am waiting for some Jews to promote some negative shyt about their people through music and movies. It will not happen but we are okay with co-signing our own negative images.

I had a friend that listens to A LOT of gangsta rap. I started to realize that dude is hater when he sees of the black men doing well. He does not respect the mother of his son who he lives with. He rejects anything uplifting for black people. He argued with me that Lil Wayne's Emmit Til lyrics were not a big deal and he doesn't see the big deal in people being upset. This is a guy who was upset about Trayvon Martin verdict yet he cannot see the bigger picture. Needless to say I am no longer cool with him because he just doesn't get it. I know that he is heavily influenced by the garbage he pumps into his head. Music is more influential than movies because its is much easier to take with you and its easier to repeat a message. I can watch Godfather once a year but I can put Bout It, Bout It on repeat with ease.

Nowadays, bringing up these things gets you ridiculed by the own people who you care about the well-being of and their loved ones...but they prefer to act like zombies out for blood. Then we wonder why things are so messed up. This is called social engineering. All the negative stuff you are seeing within our community is socially engineered.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_engineering_(political_science)

Before one can engage in social engineering, one must have reliable information about the society that is to be engineered and effective tools to carry out the engineering. Both of these became available only relatively recently: roughly within the past one hundred years. The development of social science made it possible to gather and analyze information about social attitudes and trends, which is necessary in order to judge the initial state of society before an engineering attempt and the success or failure of that attempt after it has been implemented. At the same time, the development of modern communications technology and the media provided the tools through which social engineering could be carried out.

1864 to 1964 is 100 years. Emancipation Proclamation to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. There was enough information about us during this time to figure out a way to socially engineer us from that point on. They started by killing Malcolm X in 1965 because he was a change agent and was going to bring our case to the UN. Later, they started to use the media and control our culture and implement social policies and laws that will change the direction of our people. That is why the most important information you will ger from the Civil Rights era has to do with white people allowing to spend monery at their restaurants and play on their sports teams. Being socially acceptable is now all black people want and the "I Have a Dream" speech is our template. We do not care about the fact we still face economic segregation and don't own much of anything on our own as long as white people like us. All this stuff was not by accident.

Funny thing is that most of the negative acts (outside of Wayne, Nicki, and a few more) are flopping left and right these days. Why is radio pushing negative artists that can't sell shyt? :leostare:

Such :demonic: forces indeed.

it's easy for you to say the black community needs black record labels when the outside forces are doing everything and anything to break them up before they even start.
it's not a coincidence ruthless records, death row records, rocafella, murder inc, no limit were all broken up. all while they had their jewish lawyers supposedly on their side. the entertainment industry just is laid out for black ppl not to succeed. they want them broken up. divided. they want confusion btwn artists and black execs. divide and conquer techniques. jay-z vs dame vs irv gotti vs whoever. they want them all to go against each other. when ya mama told you the devil works with music it's these zionists she was talkin about. black artists can't make it trying to make positive music because they don't want positive music. knowledge is dangerous to them. these zionist cracka devils don't care for the black community. they just want to rape it for the money. and once they had a foot in the door with ruthless records they were in.

the black community is socially engineered to be a failure. and music is just one of the tools to make sure that happens. back in 93 we all gunned for snoop to beat the murder charge because he was one of us. little did we know they saw how powerful the music was and used it to promote all the violence and negativity in our neighborhoods til today.
the white artists don't have to sell drugs or kill people to gain credibility. only black artists. they've engineered it to the point now they don't have to do it.. it's us doing it. look at your bud he's been brainwashed to the point where he doesn't even know what the fuq is going on. take a nicca like him (+ brainwashing himself with gangsta rap + his local school having poor eduction + his neighborhood poorly governed + his parents barely being able to make it+ laws designed to keep ppl like him down) x10 million kids like him and you've socially engineered time bombs all over the united states.

look at all the junk viacom puts on BET. they took BET from robert johnson to use it as a tool to keep the black community down. i dont know how they hell they pull off convincing the robert johnsons, russell simmons to sell their companies.

zionists and jews are one and the same thing because you go at a zionist the jew will cry anti semitic. which makes the innocent hebrew even more dangerous than the zionist. the hebrew can't speak against the zionist.. when have you seen a jew or a hebrew speak out against the zionist? a nicca like glen beck mentioned a fact and said jews killed jesus and they trolled him, called him anti-semitic and got him out of there quick.

jews were part of the entertainment industry from 1900 but they weren't this bad. they were outsiders and america had it's own culture. but today it's just another nontalented jewish or their puppet forced on the ppl on tv on some wack tv show or movie with hebrew and zionist illuminati symbolism... fuq em.

Crazy, but what you consider the likes of J. Cole, Kendrick, and Drake in this historical mess. None of them used gangs or violence on their image, but they were successful. Why is that?

j cole lucked out being under jay-z.
kendrick, papoose exposed him. papoose's record has been blackballed and the clean version (for radio) virtually wiped off the internet.
drake is a hebrew boy.. he gets a path created for him from "his bottom" all the way up to success. just like all the hebrew actors in hollywood.

Kendrick ain't an industry plant. From the sales to the quotables, people legit love him. GKMC is all about making it in a Mad City. I can understand about Drake, but Cole is the one leading the sales and lyrical compartment. Funny how negative trap music is being pushed all the time, but it sells abysmal and can't even cover basic expenses from the record company, but radio plays it all day.

kendrick makes corny music. but of course because he's on that aftermath/interscope/shady machine he'll stick. he still makes corny semi-gangsta music.

you saw when papoose served his ass the zionist level 1 attack dog rosenberg went all defending him on nyc radio.

the homie joel ortiz thinks going easy on kendrick might get him a second shot over there in that zionist machine...

I understand, but there aren't a lot of people in Gen Y making music like the LOX, Daz Dillinger, etc. Times have changed and generation differences are apparent.

there's plenty of artists making good music that aren't getting a shot. even then.. a lot of these artists need to quit with the foolery with their college degrees and stop making monkey music.

Yeah, but are any of them under 30 with something fresh to say? If they over 30 and they on that immature shyt that sounded like it came from the 90s, you ain't gonna have a shot for either a good album or longevity in their career.

"Monkey music" is the shyt that is flopping left and right in 2013.

The Wrong Side of the Tracks
Starin' at a skyscraper reachin' into Heaven
While over in the ghetto, I'm livin' in Hell
Just play ball or be an entertainer
'Cause n1ggaz like me can't read too well
Nobody loves me, nobody cares
I dream about a life but I'm livin' in a nightmare
Paranoid
Schizo
Setback
Snowbound
Bad news
Psycho
Heart attack
Breakdown

I doubt very highly more than 10 people on this site even know who made this song even though the majority can easily identify with the lyrics.

Hip hop used to be so much more than 'Beng-beng, Maybachs, bytchez, guns and drugs'.

Nas was right.......but still lost.
