A major surprise that would be thrown up when the rebased Gross Domestic Product (GDP) numbers are finally released on Sunday is how Nigeria’s Nollywood industry, now captured under “Motion pictures, sound recording and music production,” has made a huge leap to about N9trillion in size.

In the last five years, the industry has been growing in terms of quality, and has been rated the third most valuable movie industry in the world, behind Hollywood and Bollywood. The development has also impacted on returns.

Just as it has ranked third globally in terms of quality of production, it has grossed revenues that placed it third in the world.

The reason why I made this thread is to show the potential we as blacks have globally. Nollywood is now worth 9 trillion naira which when converted is about 54 billion dollars. Basically Nollywood contributes 54 billion dollars to Nigerias GDP yearly. When one makes a comparison to Hollywood which contributes 500 Billion dollars to americas GDP yearly one can see this is an amazing feat.( http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hollywood-creative-industries-add-504-662691 )
You have to remember that nollywood caters to an audience of mainly Africans and Afro Caribbeans. Though unfortunately it has not caught on with our African American and Black Brazilian counterparts.
One also has to also take into consideration that we as blacks dont have great purchasing power globally and yet we have been able to achieve this feat. Then when you add the fact that the average quality of Nollywood movies are not in the same ball pack as Hollywood or Bollywood movies and also the nonexistent animation sector and rampant piracy and one sees this development as an even greater feat.
As African and Afro Carribean economies continue to rise and as blacks gain access to more disposable income, I foresee Nollywood overtaking Hollywood in the near future.
This shows the economic potential we blacks have today. Everything is not doom and gloom. Though at the moment a lot of work needs to be done. Nollywood movies are lacking in quality and there is a dearth of skilled workers in the entertainment sector. This is were I see the African diaspora stepping in. If Nollywood can find ways to collaborate with black hollywood and the Caribbean movie industry we can all benefit immensely.
This gives me joy because if we can do this in the entertainment industry, It means that there is hope for blacks to create businesses in any sector worldwide and benefit immensely. The potential is there and its being realized in the entertainment industry at the moment.

Black Excellence:blessed:

This is a great article....and I remember I did a thread on :hamster: about the Nollywood and Black Hollywood working together... maybe this will cause some folks to do some double takes :lupe: :whoo: :ohhh:

However, for it to overtake Hollywood "very soon" is a bit exaggerated.... you would have to capture Arab, Hispanic, European, Asian, and American audiences, which is what Hollywood does....

Yep. Both sides can benefit Immensely. I have seen some black hollywood productions and the cinematography blows away a lot of the stuff coming out In nollywood. At the same time nollywood has the money to finance big projects.

Yeah but your missing purchasing power. Blacks globally dont have a lot of wealth yet somehow with the little we have at the moment Nollywood is contributing 54 billion dollars. While Hollywood with its global appeal is only contributing 500 Billion to americas economy. As more blacks in Africa and around the world get access to greater levels of disposable income and as collaboration between blacks globally increases it could possibly topple Hollywood without even appealing to Asian or European audiences.

Exactly......if those numbers don't convince Black Hollywood to partner up then I don't know what will.....

I don't see this happening breh, definitely not in our lifetime since entertainment is dependent on excessive disposable income and the African/black diaspora economies are not growing at a rate that Hollywood is growing at. Although we constantly hear about the losses large blockbuster movies have, they never reveal the increasing market in Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu shows/movies. The overall entertainment industry is actually growing and Hollywood is tough to beat, hence Bollywood never even being allowed to seriously enter the American market.

Well purchasing power relates to the economy you are in so it is actually strong within the borders of Nigeria where the majority of the movie market is. This kind of hinders the expansion of the industry since the population are dependent on finding a livable wage and could therefore not adjust to paying the prices Nollywood need to have to be competitive.

No way Nollywood is competing with Hollywood. A lot their movies are very cheesy but have a strong African appeal so people from South Africa to Kenya to Senegal can enjoy it. I do think that black Hollywood needs to consider doing some stuff with Nollywood. They would have a larger global appeal and they will actually make more money. If Kevin Hart did a Nollywood movie or a Hollywood based movie with a parody with Nollywood actors that might be the funniest black comedy of all time. Instead of Coming to America...it would be Coming Back to Africa. You can't tell me something like that wouldn't do crazy numbers in the US, Caribbean, and Africa. Ohh, I impress myself...I might need a catcher's mitt to catch myself :banderas:

The cacs and "so-called" jews in Hollywood probably would want to stop such a project though...but I don't care...we need to build our own stuff with each other across the globe.

This is great. For real. Blacks around the world need an avenue to tell our own stories. Hopefully Black American actors/directors/producers will start linking up with Nollywood studios in the future.

Black Ancient Egypt movie :banderas:
Black Moors movie :banderas:
Ethiopians vs. European Imperialism movie :banderas:
Ancient Mali movie :banderas:
Patrice Lumumba movie :banderas:
Nat Turner movie :banderas:
Haiti Revolution movie :banderas:

:ehh:

Yep.... all these and more...

Songhay Empire movie....

Hanibal movie (unless Hollywood does it first)

Nzingha movie (warrior queen that existed in present day Angola)

Then just contemporary movies showing the Diaspora connecting ..... I said a long time ago back on :hamster:, a fresh comedy convept would be to have an African and African-American couple in a sitcom ......nothing like that has been made, that digs into the idiosyncracies of that larger connection ........

So much stuff....

True There is no doubt Hollywood is a Titan and will be tough to beat but it is still possible. Though you have to remember that africa as a whole is home to the fastest growing middle class in the world.(http://www.uhy.com/the-worlds-fastest-growing-middle-class/) So the disposable income potential can be realized faster than you think.
Plus Nollywood does not necessarily need to access the american market or even gain global mass appeal to beat Hollywood. Hollywood again with its global reach contributes 500 billion to americas economy yearly. (http://online.wsj.com/article/AP614cc48543624c3e81f8ade7220c91f1.html)
Nollywood with its mainly african and Caribbean market who are strapped for cash is already contributing 54 billion yearly. This is with rampant leakages like piracy on levels Hollywood cannot even begin to comprehend. If the Nigerian government can plug in those leakages, work with Nollywood to increase the quality of their content and begin mass advertising of Nollywood movies using the media platforms available (something that is almost non existent at the moment) ,begin to push for growth in cinema culture and then you add in the growing disposable income of Africans. Nollywood can challenge Hollyoowd.

Yep, the thing is there is a younger, hungrier tech savvy group of black people in the diaspora that have the ability to create high quality films that would rival Hollywood. You can film a Haitian revolution film in Africa with ease, we don't need Hollywood for it.
