Nelson is tough but the new breed are too athletic he has no chance at the title

Like I've said in the past, LHW is lacking contenders (although we now have Rumble in the mix), why would the UFC want to kill off a contender? Your scenario makes close to 0 sense for the UFC.

In a perfect world, where the LHW division has tons of worthy contenders, a Gus/Cormier match-up would make some sense, but that's not the case.

What are you trying to say/prove? Jones has fought a lot and beaten a bunch of contenders, which is a major reason why the division is lacking contenders. Jones has pretty much beaten most of them.

Gus fought in March, that's a very quick turnaround. Again, what if the winner of Gus/Cormier gets injured or has a lengthy medical suspension, who would you have fighting Jones?

Also, why would the UFC risk a money-making rematch (with Gus) and like I've said, kill off a contender.

With injuries and lack of depth (in some divisions), you can't always have the best fighting each other. Either way, usually the top guys fight each other
