Since lions have dominated tigers through history:

The lion steps it up and goes for the next contender, the biggest and baddest of the brown bears, the kodiak.

Cool choice bro, I think the biggest of the kodiaks have a massive size advantage. But will it be enough? That link showed how bears fight, theres some biologist in there that stated that bears dont throw blows with their paws, the grapple and hug, will that be enough to get through the lions superior striking capability's and defensive powers of his mane?

Striking strength of lions:

The african lions striking strength

List of things lions have killed with a blow from their paws:

- Hyenas
- Leopards
- Pumas
- Jaguars
- Lions
- Tigers
- Black Bears
- Brown bears
- Zebras
- Donkeys
- Mules
- Horses
- Camels
- Oxen
- Buffalo's
- Elands

Biologist noted equivalents of the lions striking strength: Breaks backs, necks and shatters skulls...Breaks ply boards...Lightning bolt...Steam hammer

Defensive protection and durability of lions:

The african lions mane:

Protects against:

- Bites from Fangs
- Slashes from Claws
- Lessens blows and damage

Will the size be enough to by pass these set of skills and assets?

@Sword too much endurance and intelligence. Can take a few of the lions blows but once it has it in its grip, it's over.

Thats cool, yeah the bear has good size and strength in wrestling down things with its bulk, but since that link showed over a 100 cases of grizzly bears being killed by pumas, goats, boars, moose, bulls and other animals...I mean a 100 times...then I dont think the bear is that durable, maybe like you said, more endurance, but not more durable, afterall lions dominate hyena:

So the lion will be bringing the pain and the aggression, the intensity and agility times in with stronger strikes. While bears dont seem to handle wolves all that much:

It seems at times the bovines like moose are too much for the kodiak:

Moose defeats rival and then two bears at once:

Yet lions who hunt eland, which can be twice as big as a moose, have little to no trouble:

Giant elands can reach twice the weights of bull moose and their size next to a elephant shows there immense bulk:
Beard_Eland-Bull.jpg

One of the biggest elands weighed over two tons:Fritchman's Eland tipped the scales at over 4,000 pounds

Both the elands fell, struck senseless by the blows of the lions' pawsand by the grip of the powerful teeth just forward of the shoulder.

shadow.jpg

Shadow, has managed to bring down a huge Eland bull. He has been on the kill for the last few days with hundreds of kilograms of meat at his paws. We estimate shadow to be around 220-230kg’s but that is tiny compared to the possible 700 – 800 KgEland bull in picture.

(Single handedly)

(Lions kill eland more than any other species) The lions killed a wide range of species but eland and gemsbok were their main prey. If we compare these predation data to the known prey population data (earlier graph) lions kill less springbok but more eland than what is present in the population. Therefore, if we only compare species of roughly the same mass (eland, gemsbok, hartebeest and ostrich) lions kill significantly more eland than any other species
http://www.desertlion.info/reports/kgl_report.pdf

On our last trip (September 2015), we had a fascinating time watching a pair of young bachelor lions, about three and a half years old, guarding the carcass of a large female eland (the most cow-like of the antelopes) that they had killed a couple of days before.

https://mahb.stanford.edu/wp-conten...BeyondTheBigFive_AEhrli chPEhrlich_Oct2015.pdf

Even male lions under two years old can cooperatively kill a near 2,000 lb animal

The 3 youngsters are spending more and more time away from the adults as they get older – they’re roughly 1.5 years old. We have been very impressed to see them hunt and kill some rather large animals and the eland was the biggest yet…weighing in at roughly 800 kg.
Lion Kill

with the sudden appearance of two lions and their eland kill.[/b]Lions hunt eland far more than expected based on their encounter rate, but only kill them in proportion to the number of hunting attempts (Fig. 1). There were not enough hunts of eland during 96 hour follows to calculate hunting success, however lions non-preferentially killed eland in Addo, as they do elsewhere (Fig. 1).

1958 "Lions killed an eland bull in the Wamba sanctuary towards the end of June...A pair of lions killed a large eland bull, and fed on it for two days...."On the Marsol plains — after investigating vultures — the Warden observed a pair of adult lions with two half-grown cubs, feeding on the carcass of a freshly killed cow eland.. ..."About a mile from Maktau, the Warden shot an eland bull, which was very weak and appeared to have wounds around its neck and back. On inspection, the wounds indicated claw and teeth marks of a lion." Kenya Game archives 1965

The natives and lions are very similar in their tastes in the selection of tit-bits: an eland may be seen disemboweled by a lion so completely that he scarcely seems cut up at all.

So in terms of fire power, I think the lion will be bringing the heat, no dought the bear will be on the defensive and with one wrong move the lion could be in deep trouble. But the lion is a big game hunter so he use to taking on bigger opponents, the lion has the striking advantage, and is revered as a head hunter, all his blows are to the head...the head holds the brain, so the bear will too have to watch out, because once hes down the lion will have the advantage:

I think the kodiaks size will be a big advantage in this fight, but size isnt a garentee, especially when hes going up against a animal that casually hunts things bigger than the bear.

Probably the lion.

But you guys act like lions aren't killed every day by elephants and buffalo.

This is probably why lions are so tough, they face much more intense and rapid competition:
Helpless lion is crushed under the feet of massive buffalo stampede

Entire books have been written on cape buffalo, they were nick named the black death for a reason. The bear could be a one shotter if he grabs the lion, but lions deal with one shotters all the time, so he will have the better evasive manuverability:

Even the crocs jaw/muzzled or snout area is almost the length of the lionesses body.

A few weeks ago these game scouts came across this huge 14ft crocodile lying dead on the sand in the Chiredzi River water course. Of course they were very hesitant to approach this huge beast but after some time they realised it was dead.

On closer investigation they found the croc had what looked like bite wounds on its belly and around the neck....The lions wouldn’t have cared less for the leopard but the 14 ft monster was something to think about.

“This croc thought it would try and steal the impala that the lions had killed near camp early one morning. After a lot of noise and a fight, the lions killed the croc and ate it too.”

it became evident that lions had killed both warthog and crocodile:

One morning we went outside the camp area, and there was a lion eating a crocodile!

As the sun rose over the plains of the Serengetti game park, some of the animals would wake up to a wonderful sunny morning, but sadly enough some would not. And among these the crocodile. It had been taken out by a team of 4 supposedly daring Pride known to take on the toughest in the Jungle. This was a first seen by the rangers. A special sight for the www.lakevictoriaexpedition.com team
Please don't post that much information in one post again.
I get your point. Lions are prolific predators.

My money's on the Bear even though the Lion got agility and a considerable amount of power. But if that Bear latches onto his neck and bites down.
:salute:Good night.
