How does this work for sheer unadulterated amateurs. Would I be better off learning easier stuff first?

start with web development, ruby or javascript, it's not too difficult for a determined beginner to pick up

Python.

Seems everyone is choosing Ruby but, I prefer Python. The syntax seems clearer to me.

My goal is to become proficient (professionally) before September/October 2016.
