1. FEW people have been pardoned for a murder conviction. There have been people pardoned for attempted murder and even war-time murders, OR military murders but not domestic murder, and especially not of a cop. AND she's on the run. In another country. Without a US extradition policy. AKA. Good fukking luck.
2. She was convicted in state court for state law violations. Not federal ones, which are the only one's he can overturn. He'd have to get the governor to overturn the verdict
3. He can pardon her on any pending federal charge(s) and she'll still be a convicted murderer...she'd have to have a federal trial opened, tried, then found not-guilty of...and that's a super long-shot
Now...did Assata do it?
Most of this board seems to think she didn't.
I... don't know. The ballistics don't implicate her, but the fact is that regardless of everything that went down at that point in time in the US, this was the only known time of a black person truly facing that power structure AND WINNING.
So what we're left with is a dead cop, a woman who proclaims her innocence, and at best a really sloppy trial.
...but I don't know if that accounts enough to be worthy of a pardon IN THE EYES OF THE INTEGRITY OF THE LAW...and I know this statement will piss a bunch of you off, but its true. And its even more ironic considering all the previous pardons that have ever taken place and how presidents pardon their buddies it seems. Take a look:

Whats even MORE interesting is that Obama has pardoned a LOT of people for drug cases. Its fascinating if you ask me.:

Now...Obama is facing some SERIOUS lateral pull to both sides at the moment. The country has a problem with police integrity...but obama is basically the number one cop in the country.
So does he alienate the franchise of police and law enforcement and piss them off and encouraging them to take even more liberties to assault the innocent and impose upon those who need due process?
or...
does he satisfy the black community by pardoning a woman whose case as become a rallying cry of a case that is at best one that seeks to identify itself in nuance instead of an outright and clear victory.
I predict he might stay out of this one.
Do I think he should?...I really and truly don't know.
If it does happen, Obama would be setting a serious precedent with respect to the image of law enforcement and I don't know if he's worried about his legacy, but it might seriously hurt the chances of a person of color reaching that high of an office again under the threat of diminished race relations.
