You might not know her by name, but if you’ve followed entertainment in any capacity over the last 20 years there’s no doubt that at some point you’ve encountered Thea Vidale. Throughout her two decades in show business Thea has done it all, from having her own network sitcom (the short lived Thea which ran on ABC) to laying the smackdown on WWE programming.
If you don’t know Thea by name don’t feel bad, that’s actually the way she wants it. When I caught up with Thea after a production of her latest musical, “My Mama Told Me You Ain’t About Nothing” at the Little Theatre here in Port Arthur Thea seemed at peace with her current state of pop cultural irrelevance. “When I was doing the TV shows and the big budget movies I had a lot of fun, but the stress was just overwhelming. I couldn’t even enjoy a night out at the Golden Corral without being harassed by fans.”
Now Thea lives a much more understated lifestyle without the glaring spotlight of celebrity and fame. Since the mid-2000s Thea has only taken small roles in TV and movies, so that she could focus on her true passion, the theater. “I absolutely love doing musicals, it gives me a chance to be an entertainer without all of the negativity that comes from being a mainstream celebrity.” When asked if she would ever consider a return to the spotlight Thea made it perfectly clear that that chapter of her life was done.
Now she only wants to focus on her future, which includes two theater productions in the coming new year. “Right now I have two big musical plays lined up for early to mid 2015. One is called “Mama, We Out Of Kool-Aid” and the other has a working title of “They Done Locked Tyrone Up Again”. What we want to do with these plays is send an uplifting message to everybody that comes out to watch them, but specifically the black community. There's a deep and powerful message in both of these shows, and I hope the people come out to see them”
Although throughout our interview Thea seemed to be joyous there was one topic that soured her mood, the WWE. Thea worked with the WWE during 2006, and she says that was the low point of her career. “I genuinely hated that place. While I was there I was sexually harassed everyday by a perverted middle age man that didn't understand what no meant." Although Thea refused to name names she definitely hasn't forgiven the perpetrator. "It was disgusting, I'll never forget the day he came into my changing area with his private parts hanging out of his pants. I made up my mind at that point I was done with that company.”
Despite her negative stint in the WWE Thea reflects fondly on her 20 plus year career in show business. “If you would have told me when I was a 10-year old girl I’d be where I am today I would have laughed. This has been a dream come true.”
If you want to see Thea in action you can catch her in shows that will be running throughout East Texas and parts of Louisiana.
