The game uses the exact same data from Ingress, a game made by the same company that made Pokemon Go. It was also location based like this game but it wasn't nowhere as big as this game already is lol

But anyways people were able submit their own data to the game on there, so over time a database filled up with local data. It's why the game knows about your red electrical box down the street
