Sorta self- explanatory, but Maslow's hierarchy of needs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs.svg

With the virgin going on a rampage in Santa Barbara, the ugly negro thread doing numbers, the economy still doing the stanky leg on stilts, etc....... to what extent have yall achieved/acquired each of these 28 needs, some are obvious.

I'm going to start from bottom of pyramid to the top (copy and paste).

Green
= greatly/consistently achieved/acquired
Yellow = moderately achieved/acquired;
Red = not/rarely achieved/acquired

I'll start from the bottom. (Copy and paste and highlight yours)

1) Physiological: Breathing, food, water, sex, sleep, homeostasis, excretion
2) Safety: Security of body, employment, resources, morality, family, health, property
3) Love/Belonging: Friendship, family, sexual intimacy
4) Esteem: Self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others, respect by others
5) Self actualization: Morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of prejudice, acceptance of facts

Interesting topic.:obama:

I might do the exercise later, but for now I'll say that I don't think the progression is as straightforward and as linear as Maslow would suggest. Humans being humans, many of the needs from different categories are often tied together in complex and unexpected, sometimes disfunctional ways.

I definitely think we are constantly in flux with our needs.... As soon as we feel like we have fulfilled one need, we focus on other priorities and have a tendency to neglect the others....

A teeter totter is a great visual representative... where we are always searching for balance...

I played Sims heavy back in college. I haven't played it in a while though...a modern take on the concept of control and self actualization

What are your thoughts on this being potentially false? I think it has some bearings but sex is not as big of a need as water

I'm not going to bother with colour coding or copy pasting each category. I'm just going to score myself in total for each tier. 1 point for green, half a point for orange, none for red.

1) Physiological 4

2) Safety 3.5

3) Love/Belonging 1

4) Esteem 2

5) Self-actualization 6

That's a total of 16.5 points out of a possible 28.

Now are just going to put up our numbers or are we going to have a discussion about what it actually means for each of us? What's 16.5 out of 28? Not much more than a pass grade, a C- at best. A C- aligns with how I assess my life at the moment. Things just aren't going all that well for me.

I don't have a lot of the more basic shyt. Most of my points come from the top tier. What does that mean? How is that even possible :mindblown: I thought the way this system is supposed to work is, it gets harder and harder to get things from the top tiers if the bottom tiers aren't going well for you. That doesn't seem to be the case with me. If anything I feel like the top tier is easiest because all of the things in it are entirely in your own hands. The bottom tiers need other people to provide for you, and if you can't persuade them to then you're stuck and there's nothing you can do about it
