I personally believe the best UI designers aren't fat. sloppy lifestyle leads to sloppy work. I don't know if that is a fact though.

Im interested in getting started in this. Are there any online programs at schools that anyone recommends? I may be studying from abroad and/or unable to relocate to the campus (depending on when I do it), so I am looking for an online program at a college. Thanks

Fantastic thread. I think we should share our qualifications, languages, etc. that way we can ask each other questions if we run into trouble.

Proficient in Languages: C, C++, Java, MatLab
Familiar/Used: Javascript, HTML, CSS, UNIX
Basic knowledge: C#, Obj-C
Programs/IDEs used: Eclipse, Visual Studios, Xcode
Platforms: UNIX/Linux, Android OS, Windows, JVM
Areas of Study/ Research: NFC, Android Kernel security improvements, Algorithm efficiency in searching.

I'm currently part of a group trying to get a startup off the ground. We had a potential source of investment capital, but lost out on that so we're trying to find other sources. It was a very disappointing outcome but it happens.

I guess if you want to be a database administrator or write system level algorithms or something like that, you can get away with never learning user experience stuff

But if you touch any part of an application or website you will need that skill greatly. Maybe now you don't have the authority to start redesigning the application but maybe a couple years from now someone will ask you and you can start taking charge and say "no, this form is terrible we have to make another one"

And keep in mind I'm not saying design in the sense of aesthetics. I can't do any design myself either. I'm saying user interface design, how to make your applications more usable, how to arrange buttons, how to setup navigation, and all that

Easy money. Most employeers rather see some glitsy bullshyt than understand why it takes a week to code something they cant comprehend. I think there's more ui jobs out there also.

I'm also in the position to get a startup off the ground. I haven't got a team, so i'm a single founder. I've fully developed the website(front end and back end), right now i'm thinking ...do i look for a source of investment(angel investor) and hire a team or do i continue alone until i build some traffic for the website?

I read the creator of PlentyOfFish Markus Frind maintained the website by himself for 4 years, until he decided to hire some employees. His net is worth 200 milly

Also any legal advice? I've got a copyright but how do you protect the concept and design architecture, is it worth it? I'm sure i can find some Twitter, Facebook clones. What's stopping these companies from suing ripoff sites?

I'm proficient in PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript(JQuery), MySQL, Photoshop. I'm more of a web designer/idea guy than a developer but i have the skillset to code a website by myself. I'm by no means a genius programmer. I get frustrated looking at API and trying to integrate with cURL(PHP) .

Oh, this isn't about computer scientists, this is about programmers. My mistake.

It is about CS too. I'm sure a lot of us here are familiar and work with CS concepts daily.

But zerozero makes a fine point, GUI/UI is extremely important. Most people don't know shyt about computers, they just want the programs to look nice and be easy to work with. It's our job to play the Wizard in Wizard of OZ.

I reject the notion that you can't develop programs and work on CS principles at the same time. That shyt is just old computer elitist bullshyt that has no place in today's work IMO.
