Charges are pending for a Forsyth County man who reportedly pointed a shotgun at officials on Thursday, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
Kenneth Mercer, 50, of the 8300 block of Swiss Air Road off Bethel Road in northeast Forsyth, was reportedly seen walking around his front yard, allegedly pointing a shotgun at people.
Mercer faces four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer with additional charges pending.
Officials responded to the area around 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office news release. Mercer reportedly pointed his shotgun at the deputies upon their arrival and ignored multiple commands to put down his weapon, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies called in the SWAT team and Crisis Negotiation team after evacuating nearby residences and securing the perimeter around Mercer’s home. Negotiations led to Mercer surrendering and he was taken into custody.
Officials say evidence on scene shows Mercer did fire a weapon, but it was not aimed at the deputies.
A representative from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office told Patch that Mercer is in court for a first appearance as of 11 a.m. Friday morning.

“The initial deputies arrived, and then saw he had a shotgun. They took position and at that point, the man started firing toward the deputies,” said Rainwater.
When deputies arrived at the home he allegedly pointed a gun at officers and fired several times. No one was hit but the officers immediately called the SWAT team.
Fifteen SWAT team members and 20 deputies surrounded the home.
The officers drove an armored vehicle toward the man, ordering him to put down his weapon. He eventually did but as officers approached he grabbed for the firearm. That’s when one of the SWAT officers tackled him.
Deputies said they believe the suspect was trying to provoke officers into shooting him.
The suspect was identified 50-year-old Kenneth Mercer.
Rainwater told Regan that his officers were especially on guard following the death of a Fulton County police officer Wednesday.
They searched his home for additional weapons. There is no word if there was anyone else inside the house.
Mercer was charged with 4 counts of aggravated assault on officers.
