On Monday, opening statements and jury selection began. When court resumed on Tuesday, we learned more details about how prosecutors say Khaalis helped drug dealers evade police -- calling the former CNT agent and metro police officer a 'dirty cop'.
Josh Varner, a former acquaintance of Khaalis’ who is serving time in federal prison for drug conspiracy, took the stand, testifying that Khaalis tipped him off that ATF agents wanted to search his house.
Varner also testified that when Khaalis was on-duty, he took five pounds of marijuana and $8,500 from him, but was never arrested. Varner said he has no idea what happened to the drugs or the money.
"It definitely helped," said Varner. The prosecution asked, "helped in what way?"
"It helped me to know that my name was ringing. I would have had no way of knowing until they popped up to the house," said Varner.
Khaalis was terminated back in February of last year.
About five years ago, while working on the Chatham-Savannah Counter Narcotics Team, other investigators claim he was tipping off the drug dealers they were trying to arrest. A grand jury indicted Khaalis on nine felony counts of false statements and violation of oath.
We caught up with Chatham County Sheriff Chief Deputy, Roy Harris, who is also a witness in the case.Five years ago, when all of this was allegedly happening, Chief Deputy Harris was overseeing CNT. He told the jury how he believed Khaalis was compromising wire-taps and leaking information to drug dealers.
