Woman shot Tuesday in officer-involved shooting dies

The woman who was shot by police officers during a confrontation outside her home Tuesday has died.

Omaha police said late Thursday that Tiffany D. Terry, 39, succumbed to her injuries from the officer-involved shooting.

According to police, officers were sent to investigate a report of an assault at the home near 50th and Hickory streets.

As officers arrived, Johnathon Welch said he had been flagged down by his and Terry's 18-year-old daughter, who was being assaulted by Terry outside the home, police said.

When Welch stopped to intervene, Terry assaulted him before she ran into the home, police said.

When police knocked on the door, authorities said, Terry burst out of the doorway, shouting expletives at the officers.

According to police, witnesses and the five officers at the scene described Terry as being armed with knives in both hands, raising one arm above her head in a threatening manner.

After repeated commands from officers for Terry to drop the knives, police said, she threw one of the knives at Officer Emilio Luna, 23.

Luna and Officer Matthew S. Digilio, 40, then discharged their firearms multiple times. Terry was struck several times and collapsed at the scene.

Police said an officer had to physically remove one of the knives from Terry's grip. A total of three knives were recovered from the scene.

No police officers were injured in the incident, which police said was captured on cruiser cameras.

After a thorough review of the incident, authorities said, Police Chief Todd Schmaderer determined the use of deadly force by officers was reasonable and appropriate.

Per state law, however, a grand jury will convene to evaluate the officers' actions.

Luna and Digilio have been placed on administrative leave pending a separate investigation by the Omaha Police Department's Officer-Involved Investigations Squad.
