understand them to the point of what I learned in grade school. I'm not an expert such as yourself but is it not true that both theories start out as something big happened by chance to set off a chain of events to end up where we are today?

Neither theories make claims in regards to those questions. Creationists like to posit that they're claiming those things to make them sound stupid. They wouldn't be scientific theories if they said "the universe expanded by chance to set off a chain of events". We know the universe expanded, we don't know why it expanded and the big bang does not claim to know what caused expansion. It's a cosmological model.
