The recent remake of an old movie, Red Dawn, about Chinese soldiers taking over the Northwest US was upended. The Chinese influence was such that the remake of the movie had to go back into production so that it was instead North Korean soldiers that were the antagonist.

If yall remember about 2 years ago a Chinese company, Wanda Group, purchased AMC Theaters, the U.S. largest movie theater company. Then this year, AMC (now Chinese owned), went and purchased Carmike Cinemas. Www.wsj.com/articles/amc-entertainment-buy-carmike-cinemas-1457050915

Also, this year Wanda Group purchased Legendary Entertainment, the same company that made Straight Outta Compton. Www.wsj.com/articles/chinas-dalian-wanda-buys-legendary-entertainment-for-3-5-billion-1452567251

Wanda Group is planning an $8 billion dollar, 400 acre movie studio in Qingdao, northeastern China. It will be a mixed use property, with theme parks, housing and amenities for foreign filmmakers and their families to enjoy. Put that in perspective, Tyler Perry's new studio on an old military base is 500 acres, with 40% greenspace.

Latest move by Wanda Group, it is purchasing dikk Clark Productions, which is responsible for the Golden Globes, American Music Awards, and Billboard Music Awards shows.

Funny, if you go to wikipedia, Hollywood - Wikipedia, there is a story describing how it got it's name from Chinese guy. I don't know, but I've heard other origins of the name. Regardless, for good, bad, or worse, the Chinese influence is increasing in American entertainment.

Early history and developmentEdit
In 1853, one adobe hut stood in Nopalera (Nopalfield), named for the Mexican Nopal cactusindigenous to the area. By 1870, an agricultural community flourished. The area was known as theCahuenga Valley, after the pass in the Santa Monica Mountains immediately to the north.

According to the diary of H. J. Whitley, known as the "Father of Hollywood", on his honeymoon in 1886 he stood at the top of the hill looking out over the valley. Along came a Chinese man in a wagon carrying wood. The man got out of the wagon and bowed. The Chinese man was asked what he was doing and replied, "I holly-wood", meaning 'hauling wood.' H. J. Whitley had an epiphany and decided to name his new town Hollywood. Holly would represent England and wood would represent his Scottish heritage. Whitley had already started over 100 towns across the western United States.[7][8]

:mjlol: At the origin of the name.

But this should be disconcerting for many people. The fact that these companies can come purchase all these entertainment avenues and then dictate to the creatives what they have to make is appalling. They're essentially changing history. I wonder how monopoly laws work when the owners aren't American. :jbhmm:

Coincidence that this Chinese censorship and influence comes to the forefront with two big stories this week:
1) Houston Rockets admin supporting Hong Kong protestors and
2) Southpark being banned from China for satirical Chinese government episode talking specifcally about Chinese control of Hollywood
3) Video game tournament player banned for supporting Hong Kong NPR Choice page
