While promoting Magic Mike XXL, actor Channing Tatum spoke with CBR about his progress on the solo Gambit film from 20th Century Fox. Tatum cautioned that it's still early in the development process but he and director Rupert Wyatt are both keyed in on making the film stand out from other superhero films. Said Tatum, "We're so early in it. I really have some things in mind, but who knows -- it's pretty fluid at this point. I do believe that [director] Rupert [Wyatt] and I have the exact same vision of what we want to do. We want it to be different. I think Gambit is a really specific sort of character to not do some of these other things that some of the other superheroes kind of have to do. It's who they are. I think his character lends itself to doing something maybe slightly different. "
Wrapping up the conversation, Tatum said something rather interesting regarding the possibility of Gambit not being a present-day film. "Who knows? You never know what time [period] it's going to be set in."
Fox has already shown they're not afraid to set their X-Men films in different time periods. First Class was set in the '60s, Days of Future Past was set in the '70s and X-Men: Apocalypse is set to tackle the '80s. Could Gambit be set in the '90s? Or will Tatum and Wyatt double back and set the film in a time period that one of the X-Men films previously tackled? We should learn more details as we near SDCC 2015.
Gambit drops October 7, 2016 written by X-Men legend Chris Claremont & Joshua Zetumer. Directed by Rupert Wyatt.
