Keeping my overhead low, and my understand high
In the 2010 census, for example, 94% of the U.S. population selected at least one of the five standard, government-defined racial categories – white, black, Asian, American Indian or Pacific Islander. But among Latinos, just 63% selected at least one of these categories; 37% of Latinos, or 19 million, instead selected only “some other race,” with many offering write-in responsessuch as “Mexican,” Hispanic” or “Latin American.”

Federal policy defines “Hispanic” not as a race, but as an ethnicity. And it prescribes that Hispanics can in fact be of any race. But these census findings suggest that standard U.S. racial categories might either be confusing or not provide relevant options for Hispanics to describe their racial identity. They also raise an important question long pondered by social scientists and policymakers: Do Hispanics consider their Hispanic background to be part of their racial background, their ethnic background or both?

Initially my answer was no.. But after reading this story I say sure...

No, because every racial group within the Hispanic category has their own unique history and culture.

And particularly for Afro-Latinos

What does the typical hispanic who isn't black, white or asian look like?

"In other words, two-thirds of Hispanics consider themselves a race as well as an ethnicity. That’s especially true of Mexican, Central American and Caribbean Hispanics, most of whom are products of mestizaje, a New World mix of European, Native American and African races."

I figured that... Horn Africans, Arabs, Hispanics, Indians (Asia), Copts, Coloureds, Creoles, Biracials (think alicia keys) and "light skin" African Americans all have that "mixed" look to them.... and its hard to tell them apart... but thats exactly what they are, mixed people...

Here in Houston... I always mistake young urban mexican american women for half black women due to the physical likeness....

67% of Hispanics disagree...

But... I think what they gotta do is add more racial categories to the census
Most people are idiots. Not surprising.

But like I've said several times before you have to be pretty fukking dumb to think the two people pictured below are the same race.

Hispanic isn't a race. Period. Common sense should be able to tell you that.
