WASHINGTON – The FBI is conducting about 1,000 investigations of suspected white supremacists or other types of domestic terrorists who might be planning violence, top federal officials told Senate lawmakers Wednesday.

Christopher A. Wray, in his first congressional testimony as FBI director, confirmed that his office has about 1,000 inquiries that people generally categorize as “domestic terrorism” – a catchall term often used to describe those motivated to commit violence in furtherance of racist causes.

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, prompted Wray to confirm the number. FBI officials have previously said they had about 1,000 ongoing investigations in the United States of suspects who may be inspired by the Islamic State terrorist group to commit violence.

Wednesday’s hearing was the first public indication that the FBI is dealing with a similar number of so-called domestic terrorism cases.

“We’re very busy,” Wray said. Asked by Johnson if there are any differences in how they handled white supremacist terrorism cases vs. Islamic State terrorism cases, he said there are not, except for the criminal laws that may be applied.

Federal law makes it a crime to provide material support to a foreign terrorist group. There is no corresponding law regarding support for a violent white supremacist group.

“In most ways they’re similar, probably the biggest difference is there’s not a domestic terrorism offense as such,” Wray told the committee. He added that investigations of foreign-inspired suspects also may use foreign intelligence court orders to gather intelligence – a tool that would not be available in an investigation of a white supremacist group.

The debate about the lack of such a law heated up after a suspected white supremacist allegedly drove his car into a crowd of protesters in Charlottesville this summer, killing a woman. He is awaiting trial in state court on murder charges.

Under questioning from lawmakers, Wray did not take a position on whether a new law should be passed to make it easier to charge domestic terrorism cases.

He said he is concerned that would-be terrorists will try to use drones to conduct attacks in the United States, as they have overseas. And he said the battlefield defeats of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria means that some suspects who would otherwise have tried to travel to those countries to join the group have decided instead to “stay put” for the time being in their own countries.

Wray became FBI director in August, following President Donald Trump’s firing of James Comey in May.

WATCH Senate confirms Christopher Wray to lead FBI

The FBI has about 1,000 open investigations into potential domestic terrorists, including people who may be linked to extremist white supremacy, white nationalism and environmental movements, the agency's new chief, Christopher Wray, told Congress today.

During his first testimony as FBI director, Wray said domestic terrorism is “a very, very serious” matter that the investigative agency spends “a lot of our time focused on.”

"We have about 1,000 open domestic-terrorism investigations as we speak," Wray told the Senate Homeland Security Committee.

In the past year alone, 176 people in the U.S. have been arrested on suspicion of links to domestic terrorism, he said.

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Missouri, noted that inside the United States there have been nearly three times as many domestic terrorist attacks carried out by white supremacists and anti-government activists than by people inspired or otherwise tied to international terrorist groups.

Most Americans "would assume that the threat from ISIS influence is much greater, and the reality and the facts don’t support that," the Missouri senator said.

Wray said the FBI has a “significant number of agents who are working very, very hard” against domestic terrorism.

He noted that while there are no laws specifically focused on domestic terrorism, as there are for internationally-linked terrorism, federal authorities are able to charge domestic terrorism suspects with other offenses, such as for weapons violations.

He said the FBI’s 1,000 or so investigations into potential domestic terrorists are in addition to about the same number of probes by the FBI into “homegrown violent extremists” such as those who may be inspired by ISIS.

Trump’s White House Is Turning a Blind Eye to White-Supremacist Terrorism

Trump’s White House Is Turning a Blind Eye to White-Supremacist Terrorism

    • From January 2008 to the end of 2016, we identified 63 cases of Islamist domestic terrorism, meaning incidents motivated by a theocratic political ideology espoused by such groups as the Islamic State. The vast majority of these (76 percent) were foiled plots, meaning no attack took place.
    • During the same period, we found that right-wing extremists were behind nearly twice as many incidents: 115. Just over a third of these incidents (35 percent) were foiled plots. The majority were acts of terrorist violence that involved deaths, injuries or damaged property.
    • Right-wing extremist terrorism was more often deadly: Nearly a third of incidents involved fatalities, for a total of 79 deaths, while 13 percent of Islamist cases caused fatalities. (The total number of deaths associated with Islamist incidents was higher, however, reaching 90.)
    • Incidents related to left-wing ideologies, including ecoterrorism and animal rights, were comparatively rare, with 19 incidents causing seven fatalities—making the shooting attack on Republican members of Congress earlier this month somewhat of an anomaly.
    • Nearly half (48 percent) of Islamist incidents in our database were sting operations, more than four times the rate for far-right (12 percent) or far-left (10.5 percent) incidents.

Tariq Nasheed been talking about this for years now. There needs to be specific laws in place to punish these white supremacist cacs accordingly when they commit terrorist attacks on innocent people. You should automatically get life in prison without possibility of parole if you’re convicted of a terrorist attack, bottom line.

It's against protocol blacks and brown people have something wrong with them

So this will fall on deaf ears

For some strange reason they don't believe they are capable of anything despite history and some history they refuse to look up
