CHALMETTE, La. -- A community meeting was held in St. Bernard Parish on Tuesday to answer questions about a potentially deadly amoeba found in the parish's water system last week.
The parish's water system is undergoing a mandatory chlorine flush as a precautionary measure after two sites in the parish tested positive for the brain-eating amoeba.
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals contacted St. Bernard Parish officials last Wednesday after tests came back positive for the naegleria fowleri amoeba at a sampling station in Arabi, and at a separate raw water system site.
In response the parish has increased chlorine levels in its water system and will continue the process for a total of 60 days.
This isn't the first time the parish's water supply has been tainted. Back in 2013 a young boy from Mississippi visiting family died after contracting the brain eating amoeba at a home in Violet.
