President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday said that Nigeria’s deadliest group, Boko Haram, is financed by forces outside the country to destroy the continent.
Jonathan who disclosed this in Abuja, at the African Union Conference of Ministers of Finance, Economic and Planning in Abuja, also said the kind of weapons the terrorists use are very expensive and beyond the reach of the group.
The president, however, shied away from naming the culprits, country or region but said the act is targeted at destroying the continent’s economic progress, adding that African continent at the moment is the second fastest growing economy in the world after East Asia.
“Whenever we mention security, I always wonder that sometimes when you look at the characters that carry these weapons in the turbulent areas including the northern part of my country, you see a young person carrying AK 47 that costs approximately more than 1,000 dollars, but the total things he wears is not up to 50 dollars. So where is the money coming from that they are buying such expensive weapons. These poor boys carry these weapons to kill, destabilise our societies and increase our problems in terms of economic development of the continent. There are some external forces that don’t want Africa to grow, that are providing these weapons,” he said.
According to Jonathan, creating jobs is another big challenge for Ministers of Finance. He called on African leaders to redouble their efforts to open up more opportunities for youths.
He said Africa’s industrialization drive will not take place without infrastructure development. To this end, he said his administration has focused on investments in developing infrastructure such as power, roads and railways.
He charged the ministers of finance to work together as a team to share ideas, knowledge and come out with financing option from regional infrastructure project.
The President remarked that the transport links within the region are not good enough and there is need to improve them to have better regional integration.
In her remarks, the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said the time is now for African countries to actualize the common Position of African for the industrialisation and development of the continents. Johnson said that the document which was a adopted at the 26th AU Head of Government meeting in Addis Ababa has received wide range of consultations and is all inclusive.
