Box Office: Marvel's 'Black Panther' Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide

Black Panther earned $9.9 million (-39%) on its fourth Friday of release. That sets the stage for a $41.5m fourth weekend gross, enough to A) top the box office for the fourth time in a row and B) snag the third-best fourth weekend gross ever behind The Force Awakens ($42m in 2016) and Avatar ($50m in 2010). If you adjust for inflation, a $42m weekend would be seventh on the list behind only Jurassic Park ($42m adjusted), Spider-Man ($45m adjusted), The Force Awakens ($45m adjusted), The Phantom Menace ($25m in 1999/$46m adjusted), Titanic ($56m adjusted) and Avatar ($58m adjusted).
Again, that's not bad company. The film has now earned $530.8 million domestic. That means it will pass Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($532m in 2016/2017) and The Dark Knight ($534m in 2008) to become the seventh-biggest unadjusted domestic grosser of all time. And once it passes The Dark Knight, it'll be the second-biggest comic book superhero flick ever in North America behind only The Avengers ($623m in 2012). And at this juncture, that milestone may well tumble.
By the end of the weekend, Black Panther should have around $561 million in 24 days, giving it the third-biggest 24-day total behind only The Last Jedi ($572m) and The Force Awakens ($812m). Oh, and with $442m overseas (counting the $48.2m in its first two days in China), Black Panther indeed crossed $1 billion worldwide yesterday. It is the 33rd movie to top $1 billion in unadjusted global grosses, including the 16th from Walt Disney and the fifth from the MCU, alongside Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Iron Man 3 and Captain America: Civil War. And it will pass $500m overseas by tomorrow.
So now it's just a question of whether it can end the weekend past The Dark Knight ($1 billion), The Dark Knight Rises ($1.085b) or even Captain America: Civil War ($1.153b). Once that happens, it'll sit behind only Iron Man 3 ($1.215b), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($1.4b) and The Avengers among all superhero flicks. So it'll probably end its run as the biggest comic book movie ever in North America and the biggest solo superhero flick ever worldwide.
