Friend of mine started this a few years ago in NYC and it's grown to eleven different cities now. We're thinking about doing something here in Austin as the young black professional community continues to grow steadily. Anybody been to something similar and how was your experience? Did you get a chance to meet new people and gain new friends/build your network or is this environment not your cup of tea? If you're living in a new city and you don't know anybody, would you go to an event like this once or twice a year?

I see the value in these...because at the end of the day, we're all trying to get ahead in life....

But dammit, I hate schmoozing with uppity people.

what's the general concept behind it?

Low light, music/drink setting with food?

Or highly lit, no music, small talking over food type concept?

So it's more the type of people or the type of environment that's the issue? Also would you feel more comfortable if there were alcoholic beverages served?

Alcohol or no alcohol. I guess I'm not the type that likes being in peoples faces trying to find out what they do for a living in hopes of making connections.

To me, this stuff is like speed dating. I'd rather "network" through current friends/acquaintances sending others my way...or me sending others to people I know. That was my philosophy on dating. I wasn't the type to just run up on strangers on a regular (although... heh :scheme:).

Highly lit, food and music would definitely be a center piece to encourage energetic conversation. Not sure about beverages....:patrice:

The point is, if someone moves to a new city, it can be a lonely experience. You see a young black professional walking down the street who looks interesting and someone you possibly share interests with but 9 times out of 10 you're not going to spontaneously go introduce yourself....better chance you end up mean mugging them and keep it moving. In a town like Austin which has a very slim black population, I know a handful of people like me but a lot of times it feels like you're an outsider. It'd be nice to have an event like this to network with like minded individuals for camaraderie and self growth purposes.

It'd be nice to have an event like this to network with like minded individuals for camaraderie and self growth purposes.
do people usually get loose at your dinners and start dancing or is it more of a "formal" type environment where no one wants to loosen their tie and party?

I like seeing things like this HOWEVER

It is something about being around people who look like they would criticize the type of work u doing.. Like i work at port as a longshoreman which i'm on hands and knees busting my ass off 24/7 and most of them are probably doing more blue collar office jobs.

i kind of agree with @Schmoove
