The best sport, the best schools...lets get it! Its still football season but basketball begins in a few weeks. Football is cool but basketball is my favorite sport and I went to damn near every game at ASU when I was there..Teams are preparing for the upcoming season, and there are a few things to look forward to.
In the SWAC
Last season's standings were as follows
Texas Southern 23-12(16-2)
Alcorn State 18-14(13-5)
Grambling State 16-17(10-8)
Southern 15-18(10-8)
Jackson State 14-18(10-8)
Prairie View 13-20(10-8)
Mississippi Valley State 7-25(7-11)
Alabama State 8-23(6-12)
Arkansas Pine-Bluff 7-25(6-12)
Alabama A&M 2-27(2-16)
Preseason all SWAC
Parris Collins G SR. JSU
Zachary Hamilton F SR. PVAM
Demontrae Jefferson G SO. TxSU
Reginal Johnson F SR. Alcorn
Jared Sam F SR. SU
In basketball, the SWAC has historically been a 2 horse race between Alabama State and Southern, but Texas Southern has ran the league for the past 5 seasons and they should get the conference's automatic bid in the NCAA tournament once again. They really should win the conference easily unless one of their star players get hurt. Also of note, the SWAC has a few teams banned from conference and NCAA postseason play because of low APR progress...Alabama A&M, Grambling, Southern, and PV will have limited practice time this season.
Now, for the MEAC
Last season's standings
North Carolina Central 25-8(13-3)
Norfolk State 17-17(12-4)
Morgan State 14-16(11-5)
Hampton 14-17(11-5)
Savannah State 13-16(10-6)
Maryland Eastern Shore 14-20(9-7)
South Carolina State 11-20(7-9)
Delaware State 10-22(7-9)
Coppin State 8-24(7-9)
Bethune-Cookman 10-22(6-10)
Howard 10-24(5-11)
FAMU 7-23(5-11)
North Carolina A&T 3-29(1-15)
First team all MEAC
Phillip Carr F SR. Morgan State
Tiwain Kendley G SR Morgan State
Dexter McClanahan G JR SSU
Brandon Tabb G JR BCU
Desmond Williams F SR FAMU
Until NCCU won the conference last year, Hampton was the number 1 team in the MEAC for 2 years straight. NCCU loses the majority of their top players from last year, and they are expected to regress a little. Morgan and Hampton are figured to battle it out for 1st place this year. For NBA fans and Baltimore residents, old University of Maryland star player Juan Dixon will be coaching Coppin State this season. It's his first coaching gig at the D1 level, and his Baltimore connections should pay some dividends for Coppin. Howard and Savannah State are banned from postseason play because of bad APR scores.
SIAC and CIAA news and standings will be added later.
